Q: If the usb-c is plugged into an ssd drive and the usb 2.0 into a macbook air 3.0 usb port, what will the transfer speed be, 2.0 or 3.0?

I was disappointed to find out that the transfer rate with this cable is only at USB 2.0 speeds. 95MB/sec. The Techole USB 3 to USB C will give you the 300MB/sec you are looking for.

Q: Can this be used to charge the latest Macbook with an external battery?

In short...no. I tried to use it to extend the length of the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. Once I plugged this in, the laptop no longer charged (Macbook Pro 13 late 2016).
