Must read if you own or are thinking of starting your own law firm.
I have been operating my own law firm since 2003 but knew things should run smoother. This book has opened my eyes to how to have a successful and healthy law firm and life. It starts with foundational questions to explore and answer to have your practice meet your personal and professional goals and then dives into all the aspects of running a successful law firm. Each time I have read\listen to this book I get new ideas of how to improve my law firm. It provides the basic principles and concepts to having a successful business. I wish it was available when I opened my firm in 2003.

Some helpful resources- but would NOT recommend
The book was written and published by the creators of the Lawerist group. A group of advocates for small solo practitioners and provides “Labs” for their members. These Labs include coaching, educational retreats, podcasts, networking, and published material. This is the second published work (2023), after the original 2019 printing. It has the same information and recommendations as the first Small Firm Road Map book with added discussions and lessons coming from successful small Solo practitioners post the 2020 Covid pandemic. The book is written with a lot of focus on changing business practices from traditional hourly work to client centered work. There is an emphasis on self-awareness/wellness, client empathy, and out of the box entrepreneurial niche marketing (mostly focusing on technology).3 things I took away from the book :1- Lawyerst resources: labs, podcasts, and discussions available on their website.2- A Healthy Self-awareness by defining a healthy strategy: craft a clear business strategy by implementing a business model with clear mission, vision and values.3-Generate healthy profits: learn to love your numbers by monitoring financial metrics. There are no recommendations about how to acquire start-up financing. Nothing on how to get loans or offering business incentives. No real cost analysis, just an emphasis on what you need and why you need it.For these reasons- I would NOT recommend the book

Fantastic resource for small firm owners
I've read both the original version and this new revised one, and this is a must have addition to the library of every small law firm owner. This book is far more than tactical advice for law firm owners who know they need to open a trust account and start a website - it really gets to the heart of the mindset you'll need to be a successful law firm OWNER (not just a "partner"), and how learning to see your firm as a business is critical to creating the kind of life your firm should afford you.

An Absolutely Crucial Resource for Small Firm Owners
Taking the step to open my own law firm was a terrifying decision! Not only did I not know where to start, but I found myself in analysis paralysis for the decisions that I was trying to make. Eventually I was so lucky to come across the Small Firm Roadmap which provided me with guidance and a concrete set of objectives that I could accomplish in order to build the firm that I had been dreaming about. Even after I finished the book I have continued to receive crucial guidance from the coaches and other lab members on an ongoing basis. I am 3 years in for my firm now and cannot recommend this book enough!

A "must have" for any law firm owner
The Small Firm Roadmap Revisited is a "must have" for any law firm owners or those thinking about starting their own law firm. It contains solid advice and practical examples to see the advice in action. You can tell that the authors also care about the holistic person and I love the way the book allows us to create firms that work for each of us individually. 10 out of 10. Highly recommended!

great advice
Very forward and longterm advice that I much appreciated. I highlighted and took notes that I’ll have to go back to because there is a lot of great advice on what should be considered for small firms. I hadn’t even thought of what an exit plan is, and this book taught me the basics of that. No matter where I end up, I now feel I can be useful and effective.

Great read
Solid small law firm management book. In advance of a small firm partner retreat this book stood out among others read to provide concise pointers in running and growing a small law firm. Several online free resources from the book seem primarily geared to funnel towards firm consultation practice of the authors. The book itself is a strong recommend.
