I've heard this described as the "Sega Metroid", and that comparison is pretty decent. In both games, released somewhat contemporaneously, you descend into an alien world, progress in any direction you wish within the enemy's base, defeat your enemy, and get out before the base explodes. Metroid was more of a run and gun type with adventure and exploration elements, featuring intense combat, impressive scenery, and a variety of weaponry, which were all features that Zillion came up a little short in.One interesting feature, however, was that each room required a password to be entered into an on-screen computer terminal in order to progress. You'd get the individual password characters from containers within the same room, avoid traps and defeat enemies, input the code to gain access to the next room(s). For the first portion of the game this is pretty easy; toward the end, it's quite challenging. And if you forget the code, you must go back to the containers, avoiding damage, and try again. A skilled player could proceed relatively damage-free, but you tended to lose energy in large chunks for mistakes in Zillion, so any extra effort on repeating codes could be costly. I give names to the codes, which I repeat to remember them, instead of writing them down, but every player will have a strategy that works best. You can play as 3 separate characters also, once you rescue them. Irritatingly, you only rescue the third of these right before the end, long after he would've been useful, and switching characters, which you'll have to do often in the early portion, requires pausing the game on the actual master system unit itself. There are also no passwords and this is a pretty long game. I still feel like it's worth it to slog through if you've got a free afternoon. I wouldn't mind giving it another go when I get the chance; that mad dash back out the base to your spaceship the same way you came in is still a rush!
