Q: What is the gear ratio between wheel and brushes?

1 to 5. For every rotation of the wheel the brushes rotate 5 times. I discovered this experimentally. My neighbor thought I had lost it watching me count the brush rotations as I manually turned the wheel.

Q: Will this unit pick up lawn clippings on a thick bluegrass/rye grass lawn or is it just intended for leaves and debris?

It picks up lawn clippings very well. I have a John Deere and it has a system to pick up the grass cuttings and blow them into bags. But it would constantly plug up. So I started checking on alternative ways to pick up the grass. I finally got this and it works very well for that. My only concern going forward is that the way it is built makes me wonder if it might be a little fragile. But I am being careful not to be rough on it and hope it holds up well. But to answer your question - it picks up grass, leaves, etc. very well.

Q: It looks like there is NOT a cover on the hopper that would prevent leaves from rolling/blowing out as some models have. Am I correct? Thanks.

Yes, there is no cover. I have not any kind of issue with leaves or grass to roll or blow out. You will not be able to load the brass catcher to the top because it will be to heavy and the bottom will drag.

Yes. It works great and it does pull straight. I love this sweeper. I have had it for 3 years and it still works great.
