GENTLEMEN AT 21 presents the original record's 11 tracks, updated but still retaining the 1993 album's blistering swagger. The same 11 tracks that have made a visceral connection with fans over the last 21 years - the deeply dark and confessional lyrical content, the no-frills production qualities, and Greg Dulli's soul-baring vocal performances captured on tape. In addition GENTLEMEN AT 21 includes all the original demos for the album, which were recorded at John Curley's Ultrasuede studio space in Cincinnati. These eight tracks show the stark foundation of the songs, giving a deep insight into the creation of the album while at the same time revealing some remarkable moments caught on tape. The bonus material also includes the original Debonair single b-sides, including "Mr. Superlove" and a cover of the southern blue-eyed soul classic "Dark End of the Street,"along with three songs recorded live for KTCL in Denver, previously issued on the What Jail Is Like EP. The set comes packaged with a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve art and its striking front cover image, a homage to Nan Goldin's iconic "Nan and Brian in Bed, New York City," that has proven to elicit just as profound a connection for the fans as the music on the album. Review: ... big deal back in '93 - a record I liked a lot and spent some time with - I'm from the same part of the world as Afghan Whigs (in fact guitarist Rick McCollum & I made wings together at a Buffalo Wild Wings in fall '89) so Gentlemen was a big deal back in '93 - a record I liked a lot and spent some time with. Years went by and paths diverged and I stopped listening to it, and record collections disappeared and. changed and I no longer even had the means to hear it anymore. Do to the Beast revived my love for the Whigs and Gentlemen at 21 reaffirms everything I thought 23 years ago. Same time, the record sounds richer, deeper, even more fully realized than I understood at 26. No one makes rock records like this anymore. A pity, too, as Gentlemen more than stands up - now it sounds like one of the best records of its era. Not a false note or a misstep from start to finish. Perfection. Review: A must have for vinyl collections. - This is one of the best 'alt-rock' albums ever. If you are a vinyl collector, this is a must have.

Great album...questionable re-mastering and vinyl transfer
Great album and an all time classic which is clearly five star music and some of the best released of the grunge/alternative era of the late 80's through mid 90's. I just received the deluxe 3 lp vinyl edition ($33 including shipping) and have mixed feelings on the mastering which seems a little hot and loud to me. Repeated listens will be necessary. It sounds quite nice but I wanted to hear some others opinions specifically about the mastering and transfer to vinyl? It seems to be missing that analogue greatness that I was hoping for. Still very happy to have a vinyl copy of it. I did not hear that much variation in the demo tracks but the 3rd lp which has the What Jail Is Like EP is great. Overall, solid and five star music but slightly disappointed in the mastering of this. I will change my review if I feel differently after repeated listening.

Postcard from a cave.
So I was somehow unaware of this album until the reissue came out in 2014. (I didn't listen to the radio much, and have never really watched videos, so they were inexplicably off my radar.) It is a post-grunge classic album, with lyrics and music taking a wrenching look at a broken/breaking relationship. There is not a weak track on the main disc, which is a careful remaster of the original. The second disc is a treat too. (When I bought it, the listing made it look like there were three discs, but there were only two - all the songs on the listing are on the two discs, so no problem there.) The demos are particularly good and stand up well to the original release. The outtakes are a bit more spotty, but still worth listening to. Overall, this is a classic album.

Classic Afghan Whigs
I went and bought this - my fourth copy of this CD as I keep giving them away to share the awesomeness. I love this one -- gives such insight into men! LOL! Really - captures a time/feeling of a period in I think everyone's' dating/relationship life. Greg Dulli is a master story teller and singer. He is an alpha male and sexy as hell. There is a devastating duet on this as well that blows me away every single solitary time I hear it. I think this is a seminal album and every serious music fan needs to own it. The Whigs have a new album coming out and the first single, "The Lottery" sounds as awesome as this CD. I can't wait to hear the new album and hope people go back and discover/rediscover this classic.

The Afghan Whigs nailed it with this album.
Even 21 years later, this record still moves me. One of my all time favorite albums. Raw passion, love, deceit, human instinct, hatred, confusion, defiance, submission, and myriad of other heavy emotions are orchestrated within the music and melodies on Gentlemen. The coalescing of rock and soul, that has differentiated the Afghan Whigs from so many others in the same genre from the early 90's, has withstood the test of time. Dulli's forceful and even manipulative lyrics and vocals tie up this album as a story. These songs can stand on their own, but the album is not simply a collection of tracks. There lies a plot that is so pressing, sad and scary that you cannot help but listen to it all.

Read that title again, and allow it to sink in that this album is the crowning achievement of a career that also included the classic albums Congregation, Black Love and 1965. It's that good. I was first introduced to the Afghan Whigs when Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem mentioned them in an interview concerning his darker side project the Horrible Crowes. Intrigued, I looked up Gentlemen and was promptly blown away. The album positively burns with emotions. Blistering lust, barely restrained rage, regret and tragedy. Dulli's vocals alternate between a smooth croon and a grinding howl, while the music behind him either simmers gently as in "If I were Going" or brings the emotion to the fore as in "Gentlemen" or "Be Sweet". Everything this album is about can be found in the opening line of track two, where Dulli in full arrogant, predatory swing drawls "your attention, please," - drawing the listener in to his shadowy, sleazy world and refusing to let go. Everything about this album is brilliant. From the striking cover featuring two children in a somewhat adult pose charged with hinted meanings and emotions, to the music itself. it has come thundering straight into my favourite albums of all time and, if you give it a chance, it seems highly likely that the same will happen to you.
