Yes it's appropriate for a 5 yr old I bought if for my 5 yr old son and he loves it I pack his bento box with lunch items and put his thermos and a few extra snacks in the compartment for snack time at school. My s5yr old loves it

Yes it does. We use the fresh and the kids box, they both fit.
