Perfect for Keys
Since I like to keep my keys clipped to my belt loop, I have found that a carabiner is perfect for my house keys and keys with fobs for 2 cars. The problem I had was finding the right one. The first one did not have a locking mechanism. The problem that this presented was that it would come open when I was seated and I would lose keys. I thought that I could solve this with a locking carabiner, and it did work better. Never lost a key! The problem I had was that the quality of the carabiner was not so good. The locking mechanism was cumbersome to use. I decided to take a chance with a new one. The Rothco locking carabiner is perfect. I haven't lost a key and the locking mechanism is smooth and easy to use. I get joy using quality products that are well designed and functional, and I love this product!

So far, so good!
I do not use this for climbing, so if that is what you're looking to do, this review is not for you. Instead, I use this as a lock on my messenger bag, as I live in a dangerous city where I get around by walking and public transportation. I've had this lock for several winter months and it is holding up--in snow, rain, and extreme cold. There is no sign of rusting, although the metal is showing through where the locking mechanism screws up to lock or down to unlock. I think this is probably normal wear and tear, but the metal appears to be stainless steel, so I don't think it will rust over time (I'll update this review if it does). Overall, this was exactly what I was looking for and it's holding up well with daily use.

Rothco Black Locking Carabiner
I have had this carabiner for a little over a year now and use it mainly to hold my store keys. I use this carabiner several times a week and take it on and off my belt loop dozens of times a day so for this to last this long is unbelievable. I don't use the locking mechanism so I can't speak to the effectiveness of that but the quality is great, the finish has started to wear off but that's understandable with the amount of use that I put it through. My colleagues saw this and had me order them some too because they liked it so much, so I highly recommend this product at least if your looking for something to hold keys that is made of quality materials.

Not Suitable For Dog Leashes or Tie-Outs
I bought two of these with the intent to use them to connect my dog's leashes to their 50ft tie-line runs outside. When I originally purchased this the description said it was good for up to 80 pounds. The first dog I tried this on was my smaller pup. She weighs about 40 pounds. She broke this clip open (while it was 'locked') within 5 minutes of running back and forth playing outside. Thank the Gods above I was supervising her and could catch her before she ran off.The lock does not stay in place. It loosely screws up and then falls back down again. I don't see much of a point in a lock that wiggles around so much. Had the lock actually worked, I don't think she could have broken out of this lock. The strength of this carabiner was wrongfully advertised- but I see that description has now been taken down. For $5.00 I don't know what I was expecting, though. Just something strong enough to use on a dog leash. That's not what I ended up with. It's good key-chain quality, but that's about it. Don't recommend it for anything remotely strenuous.

Really small. Dimensions are way off.
I am pretty disappointed in the size of this carabiner. I had ordered one off of amazon that was just too huge and weighed more than my keys so this one "looked" like it would be about the normal size that people use for their keys as well at at $5 I thought I might as well try it.- The metal is about as thin as a pencil if not thinner.- On my other carabiner the locking screw can be tightened to stay unlocked without it getting in the way, this one does not have that.-PRODUCT DIMENSIONS ARE WAY off, actual measurements are 3in H x 1.75in L x .25 W.In all honesty when you see a review that says you might as well look a little harder and try to find something better but you say it can't be that bad. This is that review that you should pay attention to and get a different carabiner unless you want something this small.

Fine item for very light application
I picked this item up for $4 because I needed it for a very light application; really, I didn't need it to bear any weight, just to help keep a latch closed. The item I received is pretty much exactly what I expected: it is very light weight, very plain looking, and has a nut to keep it "locked." That's exactly what I wanted from it, but I wouldn't trust it for much more. The item is light and easy to clip on and off whenever it is needed. I keep it outside where it has been exposed to the elements since I received it, and there have been no problems; it is still as functional as when I received it. The locking nut serves its purpose well; it is solid enough to keep the latch closed and it spins easily on and off. While this would not likely work well in a heavier application, it does a great job of just holding things in place. The nut twists on all the way to the curve, so the threading doesn't seem to stop at any key point; you will need to adjust it where you need it. I have turned mine up all the was to the angle and had no problem with it. It still quickly spins up and down easily.Overall, this is a decent enough item for very light applications. The $4 price I paid is toward the high end of what it's worth, but I'm satisfied with it.

Excellent
This is a great basic carabiner, I'd like to get more. I use it to attach my dog's leash to her collar and another one to wrap the handle of her leash around poles or other items and lock it on securely. It's much faster than tying a knot. They get dragged around on the ground alot because she likes to carry her leash around like a toy and, well, they are at the ends of the leash. The black matt finish has come off a bit where it's been dragged along the ground, but I really didn't expect it to stay on. However, the carabiner itself is still working, after being banged on rocks, shut into doors and chewed on a bit. So, I'm happy with the product.
