The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.

Far better than others would have you believe!
I'd probably give it a 4 and a 1/2, but since I can't, I'm giving it a 5. It's definitely better than JUST a 4, for me. The Last Witch Hunter is surprisingly good, and has far more to it than I expected, considering the dreadful reviews I'd read elsewhere. It's an excellent fantasy film, with some interesting characters. Vin actually does rather well, especially when partnered with Michael Caine, and Rose Leslie also makes for a very nice leading lady. She's quite capable in her own right, as a character, but the actress herself is attractive without being a 'perfect super model', which makes a change. As for the main villain, she is appropriately nasty and looks great, with some superb (physical, not CG!) makeup (You'll be surprised what she really looks like, if you watch the making-of!).It strikes the right balance between character, adventure and story, so that it never feels as though you're being skimped on any particular aspect. On the other hand, it introduces a world that could quite easily be expanded on, if the planned sequel ever gets made (probably not, given the box-office, but it's possible). If I had one complaint, **POSSIBLE SPOILER** it would be that the villain required more than one or two followers trying to bring about her return. It needed to feel as though a larger group were waiting in the shadows. That's a minor complaint, though. The film also has a great score by Steve 'Transformers' Jablonsky, that doesn't sound too much like his previous work. It's got a couple of nice themes going on, and has some effective softer moments in addition to the action.I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Witch Hunter, which had a bit of depth to its characters and story, unlike so many of the vacuous superhero movies being churned out at the moment.

Watchable
I am always interested in Vin Diesel's movies because you really need to watch them more than once to watch everything. This one is no different.

Ok but not a 2nd viewer
Despite being panned at the Box Office and not the best reviews from DVD viewers, I thought I'd give it a go as I generally like to make up my own mind. It is definitely not a 'bad' film, but it's also not a 2nd viewing one for me. Vin Diesel play an immortal witch hunter (but with a twist to his immortality) who, in modern day New York, is keeping an eye on a variety of witches, not least of all those bad ones that wish to bring the Witch Queen back. Michael Caine is his priest sidekick who becomes cursed and it's up to Vin to kill the witch who cursed him before he dies. Naturally, Vin finds out that no everything is at it seems and those he trusted the most, have been keeping the biggest secret from him, which you see in a flashback scene. Some quite substantial plot holes and many things aren't explained, but if you just stick with what's going on, it's an ok movie.Good special effects but the film seems to rely on them heavily. Good humour too between Diesel and Caine which lightens up the mood. Not the worst I've ever seen (think 7th Son as a recent nomination for that category!), but far from the best. Throw your brain down beside you and sit back for a fun, one-off ride.

that I really *sit down* towatch. Bag of crisps
Last Witch Hunter : Vin Diesel is someone, that I really *sit down* to watch. Bag of crisps, water or drink handy, so I don't have to move till it's done! I can honestly say, he has never disappointed me, and where perhaps some poeple mind him not saying a lot in a movie, that's the thing I really like about him, he only says something if it's relevant, and the type of Sci-Fi he stars in, to me, it adds to the spirit of the film. If he's kneed deep in danger, or listening for it, you ddon't want a chatterbox of a bloke ruining it for you, at least I don't. Loved this like I loved his other work. I hope Vin will make a lot more movies that skim around the edge of Sci-Fi / Fantasy. I really enjoy his work. L.B.
