Small would fit better. I got medium for husband who it s 38-40 chest.

Not sure but I bought two XXL which was fine in the Regatta Thompson fleece (approx 48" chest)....these were very small ( I'd guess approx 44-46) in size and returned...I'd say go up one or two sizes from your usual.
