have you used this without any of the attaching combs for super close?did it work/hurt?

Yes super close, but do not have blade fully forward or it will cut the skin. So, yes it can cut that close.

Are these worth double the price of chrome pro or similar? I'm mostly bald and use my current clippers with #1 comb weekly to keep the sides tidy

I don`t know how Wahl set their prices, but this model seems to have a much more powerful motor than the Chrome Pro; if you read through the reviews of that model, the main complaint is that the motor overheats or burns out, while the few negative reviews for this model are about it being TOO powerful - not something I agree with. The combs are definitely stronger, well-fitting and offer a wider variety than any other home clippers I`ve owned. Whether the unit fits your personal needs or not is really up to you. Like all power tools, using clippers in short controlled bursts will preserve efficiency and lifespan, so the cheaper option may suit you, but I`ve used these about 12-13 times since I got them and have no reason to change my original positive impressions of them.Hope this is of help.

Anyway elite pro clippers have the 3 pin plug on them. I was initially worried about this but they must know at Wahl which country uses what plug. You could stipulate 3 pin plug on your order maybe?

No, it plugs into the mains. My wife said that cordless clippers don't have as powerful a motor as the corded variety, as she's used them in the past so she knows which are the best.What I can definitely say is that I'm chuffed with my haircut, and a work colleague today commented that "She's done a great job, it looks like you've been to a barber."I agree, it does!And what's even better is that I'll have it done again in a couple of weeks rather than waiting a month or two!
