The Doré Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy

This book - approx. the same size as a large magazine - presents all of Gustave Dore's illustrations for Dante's "Divine Comedy". It consists of 135 images - each beautifully presented. These were, in the 1860's, published as part of an illustrated edition of Dante's masterpiece. This fantastic artwork depicts a journey into Hell, through Purgatory, and finally into Paradise. Though stunning and amazing, these images are often macabre and horrific - showing horrible and vile scenes. Yet they magnificently complement Dante's epic poem. If you're a fan of Dore - who, because of his Biblical oriented illustrations, became one of the most famous artists of the 19th century - then I highly recommend this book. I also suggest both Doré's Illustrations for "Paradise Lost" (Dover Fine Art, History of Art) and The Dore Bible Illustrations (Dover Fine Art, History of Art) .

I bought this for my granddaughter, Beatrice. She is just coming up to two years of age, but already she is trying to make sense of the images. When she can read, she will make the nominal connection, and learn that an interest in poetry is not some pretentious pastime.

This little book contains the beginner's guide to Dore.

Great book- a bit dark if you’re into this sort of thing. The pictures are fantastic. Good quality.

Wonderful and cheap copy of Dore's illustrations, shame about the Dover thrift quality (which is why I took off a star).

I can never praise the artwork of Gustave Doré enough and this book is a favourite of mine. The book is a large format one (22.9 x 30.5 cm) with full page illustrations that have at the bottom of each page the title of the illustration and the appropriate lines quoted from Dante's poem.

You really relive the Divine Comedy's story just by looking at the illustrations. Dore is just extremely skilled at depicting these dark and mysterious scenarios, and they fit the story extremely well. The illustrations are also really high quality so I am very satisfied with this book.

日本でこの画集を売るとしたら値段は倍以上じゃないかな？九鬼の『神曲』には載っていない絵も入っています。つくづく「ドレ」っていうイラストレーターの元祖は凄いなって思います。

Voici un livre sans prétention apparente, broché, en anglais ce qui n'est pas gênant car il n'y a rien à lire sauf les titres et qui renferme les planches gravées que Gustave Doré a créées pour illustrer la "divine comédie". J'ai lu Dante il y a fort longtemps et de regarder cet ouvrage m'a montré la nécessité, pour moi, de relire son oeuvre, ce que je vais faire dès que possible et ce en me reportant aux planches. Pour moi, ce genre d'ouvrage est très bien car on peut le regarder tranquillement, le poser, l'ouvrir à nouveau, s'y replonger... ce que je trouve mieux qu'une exposition de gravures où les spectateurs sont agglutinés devant chaque planche à essayer de les détailler dans des conditions inconfortables et en empêchant les autres d'approcher. Là, on a tout le temps d'apprécier l'imagination et le talent de G. Doré .
