No, only quality stainless steel is used in this machine.

Why do carbon filters come with the water distiller? Surely theyre not needed because distilling makes the water pure

Carbon filters are used to remove Volatile Organic Conpounds (gases with a lower boiling point than water) as distillation alone cannot do this part.
