Well made practical USB extension. Smaller logo on top is an improvement.
I bought this extension lead in order to plug in my USB fingerprint reader and have it situated in a more convenient place on my desk. It appears well made, looks good and works as expected so I'm pleased with my purchase. I think it's good value for what it is.Note that this is a USB 2.0 item so using it in a blue USB 3.0 port will not give you USB 3.0 speeds, if that's what you're after. Cable length is a respectable 1.5m (5ft) so should suit most locations. The bulb end is a little weighted which helps it stay put on the desk but as the bottom face is just hard plastic and not rubbery it does move around if nudged or jostled.I had noted in the reviews some complaints about the large printed branding along one side of the unit being rather ugly and intrusive. The product I received, however, looks a little better than the one shown in the listing here - the branding is still there but a little smaller and now situated on the top of the bulb (see photos). I think this looks less intrusive and smarter so am happy with the new look product. Presumably StarTech actually took note of these complaints and did a bit of re-designing to make the product a little more attractive. In summary this is a good product, better looking than its predecessor and does what it's supposed to do. Recommended!

Decent quality and works perfectly
I've been playing with Windows 10 bio metrics and wanted to use a fingerprint scanner to log in. When looking at fingerprint scanners (I purchased a PQI model - ASIN B06XG4MHFJ) this was a suggested purchase to go with it and I couldn't agree more.Essentially this is a USB 2.0 extension lead with a weighted base that has a vertical mounted female USB port. Perfect for plugging a USB fingerprint reader into the top, or any other USB device or dongle that you want easy access to. If you want to use memory sticks and other high-speed devices then you should probably pay the extra and buy the USB 3.0 version of this cable, providing that your devices support that speed. For my Fingerprint reader USB 2.0 is fine. The base is made from textured plastic, shaped like a small pear and weighs about 70g so it doesn't slide off the desk like a regular USB extension would. The cable is an odd length at 5ft (which is about 140cm) but it's long enough to get from my desk to my PC so perfect for my requirements. It also seems well made with a relatively thick cableMy only criticism is the large StarTech branding printed on one side of the base. It's not very subtle and I would have preferred that to be printed on the bottom of the base instead. If it bothers you it can be positioned to the far left of your desk so that it is less visible.Pros:- Decent quality- Weighted base (70g) that doesn't slide around easily- Perfect for USB Fingerprint readers, dongles, memory sticks etc.- Available in USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 variantsCons:- StarTech branding in big letters down one side which isn't very subtle

Great piece of kit
After reading reviews about other cables and their effect on transfer speeds I was somewhat reluctant to buy one, but as my USB 3 sockets are on the back of my computer I really needed one. It arrived after a couple of days and was well packaged as always. First impressions were that it was a good solid bit of kit, a well moulded USB plug on one end and a nicely weighted docking station on the other, the cable was reassuringly thick as well and just the right length. I tested the speed of my USB 3 flash drive directly in the computer port and then again using the docking cable and it was slightly faster in the docking port, so no loss of speed at all. I highly recommend this.

Works OK but not convinced about necessity
I bought this along with a normal cable which was about one third the price. I needed one for myself and another for my Father in Law. I gave hime the choice, but was hoping that he would go with the standard one as this one is a bit cooler.Performance wise, there's nothing to choose, but as he uses his for a hdd which is permanently connected, there seems little point in him having the Startech one (hooray!), so I got to keep it.It sits on the desk quite happily and the weight of it's 5-ft cable is not able to drag the socket off because of the plastic 'bulb', which appears to be slightly weighted. The only minus point is the cost, but I guess you are paying a bit for the name, and it is a very nice product.I certainly don't regret buying it one bit!

Sturdy and functional
Well, it's a USB extension cable, so it doesn't have to achieve great things to fulfil its role in life, but I was pleasantly surprised by how sturdily constructed this bit of kit is; a decent thick cable (nothing flimsy) and a substantial end into which your USB accessories fit. The vertical orientation of the USB female socket means that it isn't perfect if you wish to plug another cable into it, but I picked it up in order to bring my USB mouse dongle into closer proximity to my cordless mouse and thereby reduce interference from my new 5GHz router, and it's done the trick very nicely indeed. I can’t offer any opinion on transfer rates that might be achieved if you were to use one of these to attach an external HDD, but it’s fine for my purposes and well worth the outlay.

The full power of USB 3.0
I bought this to extend the USB 3.0 port on the back of my desktop PC as I have none on the front. It comes sealed in a plastic zip up bag with plastic fill caps to protect the ports and connector. The first thing I noticed is the build quality was much better than I expected. The base is quite weighty and the cable is thick and very well shielded. Now the one thing I really wanted but is difficult to find on USB extensions is the ability to connect a portable USB powered external hard drive to it. I am delighted to say it works flawlessly! Most USB extension are not wired to provide all the power directly from the port but this one does.At nearly £10 it is quite expensive but for the quality I would say it's absolutely worth it.Very good purchase.
