I use the feature on all of mine, it's quite handy. I have not noticed any significant battery drain (I still haven't needed to replace the batteries after 18 months). In the settings you can set the brightness to low, medium or high. Setting it to low conserves battery, I have mine on medium.

i have mine in the kitchen , i have 3 in total , one in the living room ( wood stove ) one at the top of the stares , ive not had any false alarms , even with cooking toast , its has gone off when boiling eggs and forgetting in had put them on .....they are loud , when all 3 they all start shouting " smoke has been detected in the kitchen " it gets your attention, ive got mine connected to LIFx smart bulbs , when smoke has been detected the bulbs all flash red and white and 3 alarms shouting ....youd be hard pressed to not wake up ..
