Black coating is fire/ rust proofing. No smell or fumes. Great for cooking on. BBQ briquettes and/or wood works well for roasting marshmallows. Camping I've used it for coffee percolator,frying pan ,and boling pan. Puts off some heat too. Hope this was helpful. .

I have burned lump charcoal in mine with no problem...but that cost $...while tree litter is free
