Want to use this antenna for my midland gmrs radio as a home base. how do i properly ground it ?

no ground is needed. it grounds through your coax cable shield at transmitter

Good reception but for receive-only on 461 mhz i'm not clear from the instructions how far to slide the swr slide block before locking it?

you need a swr meter to properly setup when you transmit. generally i have found all the way in is best swr. it is called a Hairpin Matching stub.

Is this omnidirectional? If not, any ideas for GMRS?

Yagi antennas are not omnidirectional. They are very directional. The elements are longer in the back and shorter in the front. Like an arrow head. Also the elements are oriented verticaly. For omnidirectional antennas use whats refered to as a vertical or ground plane antenna. They radiate in a circular patern. They come tuned to either ham or gmrs frequencies. For gmrs the frequency will be 460-470 Mhz. All antennas have a gain number that is listed in db.The higher the gain the more effective radiated power the radio will make. An antenna with 3db gain puts out a weaker signal than one with 6db gain. In general for omnidirectional antennas a vertical with 6 db gain is a very good all around pick. And remember the antenna must be tuned for the gmrs band and not the ham band. Coax cable is also a huge factor in getting a strong signal. In the gmrs band the rg8x cb radio coax will not work. 80 percent signal loss over 100 feet is guaranteed. For gmrs radio a good economical coax choice is LMR400 . It is higher priced than cb radio coax but the cb coax is totally a waste of money for uhf radio. Hope you find it helpful and that you experiment and always improve your station and have fun.
