Rainbow Fish and the Sea Monsters' Cave

Very scary!
Well, it only scares my daughter when I read it in my spookiest voice, so I can tone it down if she gets scared. As long as I don't act too scary she loves it and the story and pictures are fun and give us stuff to talk about. A good book. We've liked all the Rainbow Fish books we've tried.Oh, these books have morals. This one seems to be about overcoming your fears and not being afraid of the unknown (things hidden in the dark).

moral friendly
A great book on how things and beings are not what you always think. A good book to teach morals in a fun imaginative way

Product not in "very good" condition
The illustrations are well done and the story itself is satisfactory. The book, however, was rated as "very good" shape by Got Book, Inc, but pages are starting to fall out and there was torn white spots in the lower right and left corners of almost all the pages. It's too much trouble to return as the price was only the cost of shipping, but the condition of the book should be honestly rated.

They have all been 'okay' but this one was really nice! Rainbow Fish and his little friend go in ...
There are several 'Rainbow Fish' books as a spin off of the original Rainbow Fish book. They have all been 'okay' but this one was really nice! Rainbow Fish and his little friend go in search of an algae that their friend needs to get better. No one else wants to go after it because it is on the other side of the 'sea monsters cave' and is super scary! But Rainbow Fish and his small friend know that they must over come their fear if their other friend is to get better. So they set off and endure something scary as they go on through the cave. They do find the algae and gather as much as they can and although they don't want to go back the way they came they know they have to, to get the algae home to their sick friend. BUT along the way they realize that their fear wasn't really anything to fear at all! And facing your fear you often realize that it's just your imagination working overtime! Rainbow Fish is teaching young readers that it's okay to be scared, but to face your fear and overcome it. Don't allow your fear to prevent you to do things you want to do! Nicely done Mr Pfister!

Not everything is as it seems...
Not everything is as it seems. When the Bumpy-Backed Fish gets ill, he needs red algae to get better. Rainbow Fish and Little Blue Fish volunteer to help their friend by going to the only place where red algae grows, past the Sea Monster's Cave. All the fish gather and gossip about how many scary monsters live there and try to convince Rainbow Fish and Little Blue Fish not to go. Seeing their friend is very ill, they could not move on without helping him. As they enter the Sea Monster's Cave, they see many scary things they are convinced are Sea Monsters. When they look a little closer they find the "Sea Monsters" are just ordinary things like rocks, sea weed and some friendly fish that appeared to be monsters because it was dark. They return to help their friend and tell all the sea about what they discovered.

A possibly dangerous mixed message from Switzerland for the smallest children.
This Swiss originated book for kids between the ages of 4 and 8 has award winner Marcus Pfister as its author. In the story a brave little fish and an even littler fish set out on a dangerous mission in order to help another fish with a medical problem. The drawings will find a warm welcome from all who see them. The story however for me has a problematic dichotomy. The small fish sets out on a heroic journey through very dangerous territory. Rainbow fish survives the trek and returns to bring aid to the ailing fish. This seems to encourage very small kids to boldly set out on their own if the mission seems important to them. Rainbow fish and his companion little blue fish have not even a tiny bit of protection as they set off into what they certainly think is a very dangerous zone. I am not comfortable about a tale that encourages very small kids to do much of anything without an adult around. As it happens, the dangers involved turn out to have been exaggerated. So the kids get the message that they should not have needless fears. While that message is a good one, the littles have plenty of actual dangers around them. I don't think they should be encouraged to set off on their own into the unknown.

Part of a good series.
Childen seem to like the Rainbow Fish stories - not at all subtle in their moralising. The pictures are lovely and even very young children appreciate them.
