How do I make these more comfortable and how long until it feels like I can move my foot in the boot

The best way is to break them in by going on walks with them, although in worse case you may need a size up. But normally normal use will fix your issue have a nice day.

I wear 9 1/2 what would be closest size for these?

Hi , my son wears a 11 to 11 1/2. But this boots run really large. We got him a size 10 wide which were slightly too big. The wide made the boot more comfortable though because they normally run very narrow. I hope that helps you decide. So you may want to try 2 sizes down. Even if the size is wrong the shipping is so fast and they take returns. Trust me they do run really big.
