Effectively tells whether your cable line is live or dead!
This little gizmo worked just as advertised. We needed to know if coaxial cable in a wall was actually carrying live cable channels, and this device proved that it was. Definitely a good value, recommend!

Does the job
I bought the Hitron cable tester to troubleshoot installation of a cable modem, which failed on my first few attempts.Inserting the battery was more difficult than I expected. The small circuit board almost popped out, and it took a few tries to replace the compartment cover. Using the tester is easy - slide the tiny switch to the on position, connect it to the coax connector or cable, and look for a red or green light. In my case, I found the coax cable in the wall had a signal but wasn't hooked up to the cover plate - joining them solved the problem and saved scheduling a visit by a tech. The Hitron tester looks like it might not withstand being tossed into my tool bag, so I'm keeping it in the box. But it did exactly what I needed for a reasonable price.

A must have for even 1x installs! Especially for multiple installs/checks
Love it! Doesn't matter if it's Xfinity or another provider! It detects the sync signal and gives a readout. Just read Kiss booklet. Basically you put battery in then connect to the coax. Should you have valid service meaning you paid cable internet bill it will work! This saves me allot headache especially with family & DIY WIRING! You can even test your own wiring handiwork! I diagnosed a wiring fault. It was FIL who thought he did not need to crimp connectors! Yes you need to crimp or use a tool for coax internet aka cable company internet! It syncs or detects signal much faster than the big black tall boxes!

Great tester to own if you have multiple cable outlets
I bought this as a " just in case" test tool since it was cheap enough. Sure enough, I soon after started seeing sporadic cable issues, but attributed it to the local cable company upgrades in the area. Left one morning with no working cable and returned to find the same. I used this tester and quickly found out I had a defective cable in the house. Simple enough, green light power, red light no power. Replaced that and working perfectly since. Absolutely paid for itself in one use.

Will NOT tell you if a line has a valid DOCSIS 3.1 status
The Hitron DSS-01 coax tester is semi useful. But the way that Hitron presents it and packages it along with DOCSIS 3.1 modems is sort of misleading. For one thing it only ranges out to 1 Ghz. That's maybe enough for older DOCSIS 3.0 modems. But the DOCSIS 3.1 spectrum runs out to over 1200 Mhz. The DSS-01 is semi useful in that it will detect gross conditions like a line being shorted out or unusable but it will not detect more nuanced problems like poor spectrum or lack of OFDM. It won't do what Hitron suggests it will when packaged with DOCSIS 3.1 modems. IT IS USELESS FOR DETERMINING IF A COAX IS SUPPLYING A OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 SIGNAL AT THE PROPER POWER AND FULL FREQUENCY SPECTRUM. On my system I had a chronic problem with DOCSIS 3.1 modems defaulting back to DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding. The DSS-01 was able to detect a gross problem like a shorted F-connector. But after it gave the line a passing grade the line still had a spectrum that fell off the cliff above 800 Mhz and would not make an OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 connection. So, if you want to find out if you have a signal, at all, this may be useful. But for verifying if your line is compliant with and delivering a good DOCSIS 3.1 signal, not really.

Nice gadget but flimsy
Nice gadget but flimsy. Simple to use, closing battery compartment is delicate work, other than that it confirmed to me what I already expected in that cable outlets in my rooms were not connected. I chose this over the other type that requires you to connect transmitters on one end and the reader at the other end... in other words I didn't have to climb up into the attic with this device.... until I have to climb up into the attic to fix the no working connections? Ugh!
