Carmilla, Deluxe Edition: The cult classic that inspired Dracula

If you liked the novel “The woman in black” then this book is for you.
This is a smallish book, a little over 8x5.5x.67 inches and only 160 pages, but in its hardback form it’s still a substantial size and beautiful enough to display in a home library or leave out in view on the bookshelf or coffee table. The dust jacket is gorgeous in matte black and red foil graphics. The story itself is thought to be one of the original vampire gothic novels and although it reads a little haltingly at first, as one becomes accustomed to the Victorian style of writing, the story becomes fully engrossing as it is suspenseful, horrific, and haunting, one which hurries the reader along at quite a clip as it coaxes the imagination to conjure vivid images of Laura’s ‘schloss’, the people in it, and the surrounding, secluded, heavily wooded Austrian countryside. Besides being a vampire story, I must say, there’s also some devious trickery and emotional manipulation afoot in this story (SURE that “woman” is Carmilla’s “mother! *giant eye roll* ), which will churn the reader’s emotions into a frothy tailspin. I first read this short novel when I was in high school and an avid library card user. Now I’m building my own home library collection which I knew would be incomplete without my very own copy of “Carmilla.” Buy this book. You’ll want to read it again.

Great Gothic Horror, Beautifully Written
This is an historic story, as it is the first Vampyre story. It is a great story. Having been written in 1872, the English is quite beautiful. It is only slightly sapphic. It is not a deluxe edition, nor is it illustrated. It is absolutely worth a read.

Perfect vampire novella
Great read! I absolutely loved this book, the language isn’t exactly what I’m used to so it was a bit difficult for me at times, but it was still a fun read even though it’s a relatively short book. The cover artwork is absolutely beautiful as well. 🩸🦇

Worth a read.
I got this expecting a slightly different story. Descriptions and reviews were quite off, based on those I viewed. I essentially was pulled in for the original vampire story. It's very well written. The writing style was quite amusing, to me. The story is a bit dry but kept me engaged. I found the ending a bit underwhelming. It very much challenged what I thought of vampires.

A book ahead of its time
Considered the first vampire novel, the book is told through the perspective of Laura, a lonely young lady who lives in a castle with her old father. One day, a lady in her horse carriage crashed and Laura and her dad decided to take the young lady to their castle. Her name was Carmilla, and she was too unwell to travel after the accident. During her stay with the family, a friendship between Laura and Carmilla begun. But Carmilla had some very strange nocturnal behavior and that started affecting Laura.Carmilla is a symbol of female power. It is a quick read. It holds themes that are ahead of its time. If you are looking for something dark, or if you like gothic vampire stories I highly recommend this book.
