How well does this work in deep space, not just regular outer space?

When viewed from deep space the pen's faint script takes longer to reach the earth. It's also affected by dark matter which has made us reconsider the location of everything... Otherwise I can write upside down. The ink is a bit on the thick side and doesn't have a soft glide, but it always works..

What's the difference between the x-mark and the regular round one?

Depends on which side of the tic tac toe board your on. X-mark makes better X's. Round one makes better O's.

How does the finish hold up on this pen? Does it scratch easily where the cap rubs against the back of the pen when in use?

I carried a black space pen in my pocket with a knife and a flashlight everyday for a few years and I can honestly say that the finish held up very well. There are a few small chips in the finish, but otherwise it is in excellent condition. The cap doesn't wear on the pen as far as I can tell. With as much abuse as I put my pen through, I'd say you probably won't have an issue.

Does this pen come with the clip?

Yes. The clip a permanent part of the top. Not sure if it would matter to you but it can't be removed. This is a great pen. You won't regret buying one.(3/6/15: I never realized the clip was removable. Either way, as I stated before, it's a great pen. My first one was lost and I immediately ordered another one. I don't plan to ever be without one.)
