I’ve had several mice checking out the trap but they haven’t gone in, what’s the secret to helping them enter? Maybe they are too smart lol

We use a little peanut butter with some kind of pungent cheese, like Romano.  Also, If they have an alternate food source, they won't bother with the trap!  Be care in checking it.  They can hide in the sides, and you won't think anything is in there.  Make sure the entrance is along a floor board.  Also, you might want to check out the clamshell trap.  It's a top that fits on any 5 gallon bucket, and when the mouse goes toward the food, they drop in.  Some cruel people fill it with water, and let the mouse drown slowly.  If you are like us, and want a humane way to trap, just leave the bucket empty.  The drop doesn't hurt them.  Then you can take "Mickey" somewhere, and set him free.  We used the trap you are using originally, and went with the clamshell. instead.

How does the trapping mechanism work?

there's a little ramp that the mouse goes on which goes down with the mouse's weight.  then when the mouse is off the ramp it goes back up, trapping the mouse.

Does it catch small mice? (1.5" body length)

It caught 3-4 mice at a time,small to regular size mice it worked great until about the second month and then it sprang and wouldn't work anymore. I contacted the company ,but they wouldn't do anything!! To bad because it worked great until,I think there were maybe to many(3). I would have purchased another but since they don't back their product!! I take them for a ride and let them go,I can't kill a living thing, (the mice)

How are mice getting out?????

Ohhhh I know that is frustrating.  Take the trap outside and hose it out.  Pay particular attention to the little rocker that leads to the inside of the trap.  Any tiny piece of bait can get under that rocker and cause it not to work.  You won't be able to see anything but it's there.  The debris will be difficult to get to but just keep rocking it back and forth until you can determine the rocker is "free floating".  Also, you should clean the trap each time you catch something.  After washing, but before the final rinse, rinse the trap with apple cider (apple juice would probably work, too) so that the scent of fear from previous trapped mice will be eliminated.
