Q: Do you recommend leaving these in for the duration of the flight, or is it ok to take them out when take off is complete?

They are very big. I don't recommend unless you have large caverns for ears.

The colored side goes into the ear. It is similar to wearing earbuds. You can adjust how far you want them to sit.

Q: how do you put them in?

You just put them in like any other stuff ear plugs. They don't make much difference on the ground, you can still hear and everything, but they help me so much, I never fly without them! For longer flights, I'll take them out once we've reached cruising altitude and put them back in for the decent. For shorter flights, like 2 hours or less, I usually just leave them in the whole flight.
