Easy to use; powerful
I had bought the AL629 after failing with the cheaper AL319 which was unable to read seatbelt and airbag codes. The AL629 is dramatically better: Sturdy, great manual, great carrying case and especially easy to use. It was easy to read the error code on the rare intermittent problem I have having with airbag sensor on a VW 2007 beetle and to reset it.

I can't imagine the devices that cost twice as much are any better
This is from the perspective of a novice.I was having to troubleshoot SRS system issues. Absolutely wonderful device got the codes (which my normal reader couldn't), and I got to the bottom of a problem with the clock spring, which was disconnecting the steering wheel airbag. I promise you it's amateur hour over here whenever I'm working on cars, so if I could figure it out, anybody can use it. The clock spring repair itself was more challenging :-DI have only a little experience fixing cars, but I'd like to inform any true first-timers that you can get a reader that does most stuff for $10 and they work EXCELLENT. I had to upgrade because I needed codes specific to my manufacturer for the SRS system (airbags, etc.), which isn't the most common reason for lights to come on. If you have a basic 'check engine' situation, this is overkill. EVERYONE should have at least the basic $10 reader though. As I understand it, and based on my experience, you don't need to buy a subscription unless you end up with a newer car than the year your reader was produced or expect to use it on the cars of others. If you drive beaters like me, you can just use this out of the box for however long your car lasts, and maybe the next one depending how old it is. Expecting ten years before I need to update.

Great for the do it yourselfer
The scanner is relatively easy to use. I did have to call tech support to do the updates and I didn’t have to wait on hold for a long time. My computer wouldn’t recognize the scanner so I had to pull the sd card out and plug it directly into the computer and then it downloaded. I was able to scan the srs on my Jeep, but it couldn’t read the srs code on my BMW, which is a little disappointing.
