This is a serious question. Has anyone ever found that drinking directly from the carafe, other than looking foolish, is a viable option?

It’s possible, but I wouldn’t do it. The ridges would make it difficult to drink out of, it would be hot to the touch and may burn your hand, and the pouring spout would get in the way. So yes, but I would strongly recommend against drinking straight out of the carafe. Just use a mug.

How difficult/easy is it to clean? The openings seem small...

it's perfectly easy to clean. yes, the opening is a bit small but any standard sponge fits in there just fine. have had no problems cleaning it.
