Good replacement for Clearview float
The gauge in our heating oil tank had become "water-logged" and was indicating a nearly empty tank that was, in fact, half full when measured with a dip stick. Based on Christine Kucik's very detailed description in another review, this looked like it would work, even though our gauge was by a totally different manufacturer. My existing gauge is a Clearview 42-44, and is only 9 years old. Removing the old float required a little bit of filing or grinding on the shaft to remove the crimps that held the retaining washers in place. After that, this new float fit on easily. It came with two spring retaining clips that fit nicely on the 1/8" diameter float rod. After reinstalling, the gauge now indicates about where it should. The half full tank now registers at about 1/2 on the gauge. This float is a bit longer than the original, with a bit small diameter as well. The overall volume is about the same. A side benefit is that the smaller diameter allows removing the whole gauge mechanism without needing to remove the threaded tank fitting, which was a major pain.I can't comment yet on how long this float will last. It is a bit pricey for a piece of plastic. But at less than 1/2 the price for an entire new gauge it seems like a good choice at the moment.

Easy to install
I just installed it today. It appears to be well-made and impervious to liquids. I only hope the small clips/washers will stay in place. In that regard, I believe it is recommended that the float be on the opposite side from the oil inlet pipe. The test for reliability will be when the tank is filled.

Technical details on this float material
The float material appears to be Nitrophyl NBR closed cell foam, possibly manufactured by Rogers Corporation. This foam is specifically made for use as a float material for gasoline with <10% ethanol, or other hydrocarbon fuels. The density of the material measured 0.156 grams per cubic centimeter (type range is 0.16 to 0.19 per Roger's Corp data). As a rigid closed cell foam it does not absorb fuel, even when cut to length and shaved/sanded to form. It is easily cut with a fine toothed saw or shaved with a sharp Exacto knife. This particular float, as received, was 1.2 inches in diameter, 3 inches long with a 3/16" diameter hole in the center.I bought this item as raw material to replace an old cork carburetor float in an antique outboard motor. I easily cut off a 3/4" length with a fine toothed hand saw & shaved the O.D. down to 1 inch with an Exacto knife. I tested it in 16:1 two cycle mixed gas for 12 hours and found that it did not absorb any fuel. This appears to be very good float material.

Fast delivery, exactly what I needed.
The Float on my 1990 Boston Whaler was sunk. Other than being twice as long as I needed it was a perfect fit. I cut it in half and now I have a spare.

Works as expected.
Cant believe I was able to find this part to replace an old float. This one is better as it wont fill up with liquid and stop working, the old one was molded out of plastic and hollow. It eventually cracked and filled up with the fluid (diesel) it was measuring.

Purchased as a cork float replacement for the boat.
I bought this to replace the gas-logged cork float on the boat. It's my understanding that the old style cork floats tend to become gas-logged not just due to age but as a result of ethanol gas. I had come across a few threads explaining that the ethanol tends to accelerate the deterioration of the varnish coating on the cork. Then allowing the cork to become saturated with gas rendering it less than acceptably functional. Made sense but Im no expert. So I figured Id try this. Apparently the latest and state of the art of options. So far so good. Was a bit longer that I wanted to use so I cut it. Better than too short of course. A bit spendy it seemed for what it is. But sometimes you just have to close your eyes and click buy.
