Irwin Tools Hanson 1788680 Pts Tap Plus Drill Combo 6mm-1.00/Number 9 for Tap Die Extraction

I'm an automobile mechanic and 6x1.00 mm is a common fastener. In many applications an 8x1.25 fastener would be better, but engineers use the smaller fastener to keep costs down. It is here that these pay off. Excellent thread depth makes a more secure fastener and a stronger assembly.

This Hanson 6mm Tap Plus #9 Drill (0.1960") Combo worked perfectly for me. I needed to mount some fenders to my aluminum framed motorcycle. Using this kit, I produced some excellent 6mm threads for the mounting bolts. I used a center punch to mark my spot. Then a 1/8" (.125") drill and a 3/16" (.1875") drill before using the #9 (.196") drill included in the kit. The tap is designed to self-align, and it worked great. I did use some tapping oil to insure easy and accurate thread cutting.

This set is a game changer when you need to drill and tap a new hole into something. The tap has a stepped area at the beginning that helps you start the tapping process perfectly straight. And the drill is the correct size, so you don't have to go running through you're entire bit set to find a size that "works"

This did the job great, before I had purchased 2 sets of the cheaper option and both 6mm broke, one after only two or three taps on thin aluminum. The drill bit also seem to be good quality.

I've been using Irwin taps and drill bit sets for years, and have been very happy with them. Yes, I did break one once, but it was totally my fault. Pay attention, and do it right and they will serve you well. The straight start feature is a nice bonus, although I usually start my taps on the lathe. Unpowered, of course.When looking for taps I look for Irwin brand first.

It's a drill & tap kit, it works great no need to hunt down a drill bit its a kit

label says 6mm with1.0mm thread pitch, but it's actually 1/4 inch 20tpi. Cannot believe this quality control issue could happen for a name brand! Wasted my time and ruined my workpiece!
