How do I know if it's healthy and well upon arrival?

The leaves will be mostly green unless you bought one that is variegated. Mine arrived in perfect condition. I let it set in its own pot for about 30 days in the area in which I planed on re-potting it. I gave it 9oz of water when it arrived and nothing more until after I transplanted it. It does excellently in very indirect sunlight and with other succulents as long as you do not over-water it. It does not like its feet wet for long periods of time...it will develop root rot if watered too much. They are one of the few indoor plants that requires very little care. I do dust the leaves occasionally, not only for esthetics, but also dust inhibits the plant leaves from acquiring small water molecules in the air. Hope this helps.

What is the width of the pot

This thing is much bigger than I thought. Pot is a baseline plastic pot roughly 9 inches across at the top and 8.5 inches deep. Tallest plant out of the top is 2.5 feet high. Plant plus pot is over 3 feet high. I was expecting a smaller plant so make sure you have room for a plant of this size.

How do I specify a certain type of snake plant when I order through Amazon?

I guess by its Latin name,or by its common name,but you'll get different types in your lineup.
