I found out about the benefits of taking DHA-EPA (long-chain omega-3s) through Dr. Gregor’s website, NutritionFacts.org. In summary, Dr. Gregor recommends taking 250 mg a day to preserve brain function, particularly as we age (based on the results from the Framington study). It may be particularly important for vegans since they don’t eat fish, and fish is a source of DHA-EPA. Apparently though, the reason it is in fish is because the fish eat algae, so it makes sense just to get it from the algae directly if you prefer not to eat fish. Here are the reasons I chose this particular supplement: • It is vegan (including the capsule). • The capsule is made from cellulose (no carrageenan, which I try to avoid because of health concerns). • The algae (from which the DHA-EPA is derived) is grown outside the ocean in clean, controlled water. I have noticed no negative side effects from taking this supplement. The capsules do have a “fishy” sort of smell if you sniff them, but this doesn’t bother me and I have never noticed a fishy taste or fishy burps later. I figure the algae just smells fishy and it’s unavoidable. I’d much rather it be natural than to have some sort of artificial flavor or scent added to try to mask it. Usually those things just make it more unpleasant anyway. It is impossible for me to measure the positive effects of taking this supplement, but I found the information shared by Dr. Gregor very convincing and recommend checking out his website for more information. I plan to take this supplement for as long as I am able to.

The Amazon description clearly states, "...delayed release vegetarian capsules to make sure there is no aftertaste" but I got a super-fishy smelling bottle of capsules that gave me a fishy aftertaste after one dose. When I contacted the seller regarding this, their email response was fast but strange in that they wanted me to "send us 12 digit barcode of the product (if possible image) which you have received, so that we can solve your issue with out returning the product." Hmmm...OK The next sentence stated that I could still return the package with the included RMA#, but in order to do so, it had to be undamaged/unopened/unused. Geez -- had they not read my email? How did they plan to remedy this since I had already opened the bottle to find out it was not as advertised? My husband said, "It's not good, send it back!" so I supplied them with the UPC# and decided to prepare the bottle for return. A day went by and I received a second email, which basically stated, "...as per the given UPC code the product which you have received is same with the product which you have placed an order with us. As per our return policy we cannot accept the returns for the used/opened products." This email doesn't even make sense! Yes, thank you for telling me I ordered a product from you. Bad taste, bad customer service, bad grammar. Don't buy it. If you're looking for a terrific vegan DHA EPA, on the other hand, get Ovega 3. No smell, no fishy aftertaste, take your chances with the grammar. ;)

Before trying these DEVA vitamins I was using these: Spectrum Essentials Vegetarian DHA -- 90 Softgels . The DEVA ones are market as delayed release, so they are supposed to have less fishy aftertaste. These pills are still gelcaps, like the others. They still smell fishy or like strong seaweed. I have some reflux problems, and if I burp after taking these, for up to a few hours, I still taste the fishy/seaweed aftertaste. After a few weeks of using them, I think there is less of an aftertaste the other one's I've tried like the Spectrum DHA gelcaps. If I eat it with food, there's less of a chance of it happening, sometimes no aftertaste at all. Not sure it's worth the difference in price between these and the less expensive Spectrum ones, but they do seem a bit better.

I was pleased to discover yet another brand of omega-3 fatty acid supplement that's suitable for vegans and vegetarians. I'd been taking Ovega-3, and I like those a lot, but I decided to try a bottle of these so I could compare. These (veggie) gelcaps from Deva are nice. They're small, though, so you would have to take two of them to get the same levels of DHA and EPA that are in Ovega. I like that these contain DHA and EPA (as opposed to ALA), because those are the active forms in the body; your body's conversion of ALA to either EPA or DHA is inefficient, at best. It's best to take DHA and EPA directly. (EPA and DHA are synthesized by algae; the only reason they're present in fish is because fish eat the algae. So the EPA and DHA here come directly from the plant source.) These do not need to be refrigerated. They don't have any smell or aftertaste. They are available from a variety of online stores -- it's generally a good thing when a supplement is widely distributed as it makes me feel like the manufacturer is more trustworthy and reliable. (I did buy these from Amazon, though, but only after investigating the brand.) In general, I have found that omega-3 supplements, in combination with diet (especially eliminating refined carbohydrates) and exercise, are great at lowering triglycerides, specifically. So if you have had a high total cholesterol reading because of your triglycerides, this is one option to consider. (Switching to whole grains is another.) In the end, I find these very similar to the ones from Ovega, with the exception that you would need to take two to get a comparable dose of essential fatty acids. However, if you want smaller pills to swallow, these might be better. I have been happy with these and would definitely consider buying them again.

I had been taking the non-delayed release version of the Deva Omega 3 vitamins, Deva Nutrition Vegan DHA-EPA Nutritional Supplement Softgel, 300 mg, 90 Count , and had no issues with them. When I went to re-order, I saw these and they are much cheaper. My frugal side came out, and I decided to try these instead. I've been taking them for about a month, and have decided that the switch was a mistake for me. I have two issues with these. 1) There is a strong fish smell and taste. I realize it is actually algae, not fish, but I think people are more familiar with what fish smells like. 2) They have a relatively large air bubble within the capsule, and that causes it to float when I am trying to swallow them. The capsule actually goes to the top of my mouth, which makes it very had to swallow. Sometimes, it takes two or three swigs of water to get these to actually go down, and that just accentuates the fishy taste. Next time, I will not take the cheaper way out - just hope to find the other kind on sale.
