Actually encourages me to play!
I have been "playing" guitar, (if that's what you call it), since I was 10 y.o., one of these that played a few chords and strum, then didn't touch guitar for years, then play again for a month, not for a few years again. Why? because I sucked at it! Now in my mid-fifties I picked it up again, and actually started learning things and ENJOYED playing, looked forward to it, actually started sounding like I knew what I was doing, played every day! Difference? THIS BOOK. Oh, how I wish I would have had this years ago! I can not recommend it enough. The "10 minutes a day" practice quote is quite optimistic, but it got me to pick up the guitar and play and believe me, there is no way you are only going to play for 10 minutes. You'll WANT to keep playing and learning... because your actually getting it and understanding thing's. Great book for beginners and those who have played a bit but needed help....The book explains guitar tablature and how to use it, easily. YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW OR LEARN HOW TO READ MUSIC! Teaches you exercises to practice, has bonuses to download, also has audio files you can download and play so you know how it's suppose to sound. That way you'll know if your playing it correctly. And just so much more, too much to describe and go over. Do yourself a favor and get this book, you will not regret it! Thank you guitar head!!

Decent starter book for beginners
This is a pretty good beginner book. I am teaching myself to play guitar and need to mainly know chords but as a violinist, I am excited to learn more and know how to play individual notes. I am up to a part of the book that’s a little harder and will need to spend more time on it to understand what to play but all this will take dedication and time.

The first guitar book I’ve ever fallen in love with.
I saw some reviews saying that this may not be for complete beginners. That is somewhat true and hence why this book gets four and not five stars.I’m not a complete beginner, I’ve been playing on and off for almost half my life, and so I thought the book was in fact much easier than it actually is. The first 10 exercises will make some people want to give up and never look at this book again. I like that it is deceptively simple.‘Ten minutes a day’ is a bit misleading. If you do only ONE of these exercises for ten minutes a day you may find yourself getting bored with this book. It will also take you such a long time to ever finish the book that way. When I found myself getting bored, I decided to maximize the ‘10 minute’ concept.Use a metronome from the beginning of the book. Start at 60, even 40 if you need to. Set a goal BPM (I play piano so I picked 120). Stack exercises—play exercises 4, 5 and 6; for example, EACH for 10 minutes. Track your progress. I’ve been doing this for two months and have made tremendous progress. Once I reach my goal BPM on an exercise, I move on to the next one.I really like this book. Out of all of the music-related books I’ve ever bought, I’m motivated to finish this one and move on to the next one in the series. I like that technique is such a huge part of the book. Many books go straight into playing songs, which is nice, but without technique, playing songs is daunting, at least for me.There is one con—the audio files are not easy for me to play on my PC. I suspect it has something to do with how I’ve saved the audio files (they come in a ZIP file) and will not hold that against Guitar Head. Also, I think I’d be willing to pay a little more for a spiral binding. It would be easier to maneuver the book while practicing if it had a spiral binding.Buy this book. Don’t be fooled by the title; you need more than ten minutes a day, but it’s not impossibly hard.

Outstanding Beginner Guitar instruction book
I recently picked up this book on the Amazon website. What I like about this book is that it's geared for the average Joe, non musician person. The exercises have audio tab that can be downloaded from the Guitar Head website. It's unusual for me to find a guitar instructional book that is not a major challenge to finish. What makes this book so great and worthwhile as a purchase is that you don't need a tremendous amount of time and effort studying in order to finish the 100 exercises listed in the book.I started playing music as a teenager on a 10 hole Hohner marine band harmonica. I would play simple tunes but I would put a lot of heart and sole into the simple songs I played. As long as you really enjoy the music you play and learn on your guitar......then that is the main objective you should seek as you play your instrument. There are some major scale forms mentioned in this book but I found it unusual they did not expand at all beyond these few basic major scale forms shown in this book. Guitar Head offers another different titled book for increasing your knowledge on different scales used for the guitar. If you don't have any musical talent like myself this is probably a great book to buy. If you have knowledge and talent playing the guitar you would probably be better off buying something else. You don't need to have the skills of Yngwie Malmsteen in order to be a proficient, competent guitarist. If more advanced, time consuming, studies of guitar instruction are not your cup of tea, that's fine, stick with what you like to play.

Useful Tools
Yeah, this is a cut and paste across the the set that I purchase. Lots of useful information. Lots of useful things to practice. And like all things you want to get better at. You need to actually practice. These will help.

Could be better
It's a good start, but the chord charts don't follow the lessons. They only show the new chords and expect you to remember the chords from 10 pages earlier. Mind you, this 10 pages spans about 3 days. Please show all the chord fingerings used in a lesson.

Well structured
This book, designed for beginners and beyond, starts out simple and easy. Easy in that it is easily followed and quickly begins to develop into some interesting complexity. A small bit of music theory is slipped in when you're not looking. There is no doubt that if one follows the exercises from the start with a consistant ten minute practice, a student can develop into an accomplished musician.
