Initial review: Limited lifespan, get a better one. Subsequent impression: Design needs seal/gasket
Worked well for 7 months until I rinsed it out to change the soap types.Added new soap, changed batteries and PUMP will not work.Red LED blinks when I hold the button down for the 3 second turn-on and blinks after a time when I interrupt the beam,BUT PUMP WILL NOT TURN ON., and yes, I cleaned the lens and the nozzle with a damp/wet cloth, checked batteries & orientation. It took 20 minutes to find "6 months warranty", but it would be useless anyway. There is no apparent way to contact them. After performing the work I mention in my comment to this rec and letting the unit dry out for a day,I reassembled it and added 4 water to 1 Dr. Bronner's soap and it's working as new.I still only give 1 star. I shouldn't have to add a rubber gasket and guard against water damage. It's used on a sink!UPDATE AUGUST 22, 2017:I'VE HAD IT!I've had to disassemble this TOO MANY TIMES!Sure, it works well for about a month, then wastes my time disassembling, wiping, all-night dry-time, reassembling ...I bought this to save time and keep my sink clean...not to play mechanic for a half hour and waste paper towels sopping up a mess!I'm replacing it in the bathroom with a "Secura".It's much bigger, but works wonderfully on my kitchen sink for dish soap dispensing. This thing is a WASTE!

Spruce vs Simple Human automatic soap dispenser
Comparison of the Spruce vs. Simple Human automatic soap dispenser:We originally had the Simple Human automatic soap dispenser for our kitchen. It was replaced twice by bed bath and beyond because it would malfunction after 3 months. After the second broke, we were refunded our money. That is when my search and research began.I stumbled upon the Spruce and Chic automatic soap dispenser and so far it has not given us any problems. With the Simple Human, water and soap would build up on the underside of the device eventually affecting the battery. The soap would eventually leak out of the sides as well (where the clear outer plastic and inner plastic would meet). With the Spruce, you have one solid base that will not lead to leaks and there's an attachable ring base for the bottom that elevates the unit so water and soap will not get into the battery chamber. The only minor flaw is that you can't adjust the amount of soap that is dispensed. For us it's a little larger than needed for hand washing but the perfect amount for dispensing dishwashing liquid.Although I occasionally receive products to test, this was not one of them. I 100% purchased this at the amount listed. Regardless of the cost to me, I always provide my own honest opinion. I hope this review has helped in your buying decision.

Nice gizmo, but overfilling will ruin it
It looks sharp and worked great while it worked. But it has a flaw, which is that if you overfill it, the soap might come over the top of the plastic tank inside, which is not really sealed. The top of the tank just kind of slips into a fitting (not screwed in, not really sealed, just held in by the guts underneath holding it up). I found that this allowed any overfilling to cause soap to be forced into and through the fitting when you screw the top cap back on, which squeezes the soap when overfilled. And right next to the loose tank fitting (like a half centimeter away) is a fully exposed circuit board (it's behind that red plastic window under the spout). Anyway, when it stopped working I took it apart and there was soap pouring and dripping all over the insides. I managed to clean it out and dry it out real well. I didn't know about the circuit board at first, and just cleaned all the contacts and wires to the motor at the bottom of the unit. Then I put it back together and the infrared light starting working again, but no motor response. I was about to throw it away, but I took it apart one more time and that's when I noticed that circuit board at the top. I realized that had been completely drenched in soap and water. So I did my best to clean that board and left the unit sitting in pieces for a couple of days for a thorough drying out. And when I put it back together again, lo and behold it all worked again! Well, for a day. Then it went dead again permanently. So it lasted about three months.Funny thing is, I might get another one, but a different brand. If you surf around Amazon you'll see that the same unit is available for $20 under different lables. I don't know if the other labels do anything about protecting the circuit board a little better (probably not), but $20 is cheap for this thing. It's really nice. I'll be more careful with the soap, but let my experience with overfilling be a warning for others. I wouldn't fill the tank more than two thirds to be absolutely safe, and be careful about turning it upside down to change batteries. Keep the soap away from the top of the tank.I might have given it 5 stars, but that loose tank fitting and the circuit board right next to it is a lapse in design sense, so 3 stars it is.

Works well, looks good.
UPDATE!! This item has died...the other one I bought for my son for Christmas died within 2 months...the replacement the seller sent to me to replace mine never even worked right out of the box! I certainly hope no one bought one of these on my original review of 5 stars because 2 dying in less than 4 months of purchase and one never even working at all, is not a good track record. In the last 8 months we have bought a new boiler....hot water heater.....pellet stove.....fridge....dishwasher.....stove....and this soap dispenser. The one 2 things that we have not had issues with are our fridge and this soap dispenser! We love it! I have it in my kitchen and it is wonderful not to have to touch anything when my hands have chicken goo on them! It is used by 3 people daily and since purchase a few months ago it has only been filled 3 times. We use regular liquid hand soap and add a bit of water to thin it out a little.
