I used the filter in the water line that supplies the refrigerator’s cold water and ice maker. Installed very easily — just inserted copper water tubing into the filter and pushed it into the filter housing. I had to cut off the old “quick connect” and threaded fittings that were used on the old filter. I had enough “excess” in the existing tubing so the slight shortening of the tubing wasn’t a problem. Just remember to follow instructions to “purge” the filter prior to connecting the outlet tubing as all of these filters will initially release some activated charcoal “fines” (i.e. “black stuff” released into the water exiting the filter) that are too small to be caught by the “final filter” portion of the filter. Filter appears to be operating as well as the previous one — don’t have the instruments to quantatively measure effectiveness, but am reasonably sure it is performing adequately.

I use this filter for a water line in my sink, rather than for my refrigerator. It works great, although the quick connectors can be problematic to work with when changing filters. The issue there is that they will leak unless the water line is completely seated, and you really can only tell that by running water through the line and seeing if it leaks. Be prepared with a bucket and towel when installing these. Tip: when you think it's seated/fitted, work it a little more so it snaps down a tiny bit. Good filter otherwise. Water comes through clean after the initial run to clean the loose charcoal out. Water tastes great and runs unobstructed through filter. Just minus one star for the annoying to install quick connectors.

The first time I installed this filter my ice cubes were gray for 10 cycles of so. The carbon in the filter has some initial powder that needs to be flushed out before using with an ice maker. I filled the filter with water and blew it out several times and let it drip out into a cup for an hour then repeated another series of rinses. The third time the water came out clear. Then I installed. I might rig up a rinse adapter I can use on the next one using some left over copper line. Probably ought to surf the net and see if someone is offering a gadget.

only have ice maker and it took some time before all the black was cleared from the ice, but now is nice and clear and has no taste. if you have the ability to run water through this before it goes to your ice maker it would be a good idea....
