One of the best graphic novels ever!
One of the best graphic novels I've ever read, and I put this one up there with "Watchmen" as one of the best. "Red Son" is a great piece of alternate history, where Superman lands on Earth 12 hours earlier, in Russia, and eventually grows up and becomes Stalin's right hand man.Eventually, Superman stops following orders and does what he does best...the right thing--even though his actions seem to conflict with his own government. Superman winds up being next in line to succeed Stalin, but politics aren't his thing. He just wants to live his life as a worker and supporter of humanity.Throughout the book, Superman faces many enemies. The biggest one is Lex Luthor, who collaborates with the CIA in an effort to create an anti-Superman deterrent. Superman winds up becoming big-brother himself, and begins building robot spies and even Brainiac himself--who helps Superman run the world via various catalogs of stats and occasional advice. The result is essentially a Utopia, where everyone works, and no one starves. However, many pro-communists remain to stifle Superman's new social vision, and of course, Lex and his fascist supporters don't like the idea of a Superman running the world...so like always, Lex tries to step on his toes.Eventually, Batman shows up...who is not the Batman we know. In this book, he's a terrorist, and he works for Lex. Other than Batman's revamping, writer Mark Millar throws another curveball with Green Lantern, who happens to have arrived via the 1947 Roswell Crash. After the ring chooses Hal, Lex Luthor employs Hal and his Green Lanter corps. to take down Superman...and the result is one big, wild climax, that pits 3 of DC's biggest heroes against each-other.All in all, a 5/5 stars...the writing is excellent. This is writing that challenges you to think and may even change the way you think. And did I not mention the art? The style is beautiful...and sort of resembles "propaganda art" from the 1940s. If you don't read graphic novels, make this your first !

What an Ending
I enjoyed Red Son very much, though it wasn't quite what I was expecting. It is, of course, an alternate history that posits the intriguing question, "what if Superman had landed in the USSR instead of Smallville?" The aspect I didn't expect was the inclusion of other D.C. heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. In one way, I thought it got a little crowded, losing some focus on the story of Superman himself. I would have enjoyed seeing more of how Superman dealt with his powers as a kid in Ukraine and then his entry into Moscow. Instead, we got an interesting Batman origin story and a glimpse into the lives of other characters in this alternate Earth. The story settled in, with some excellent ideas and gorgeous artwork to match (I adore this Superman's emblem!). But it's the final act that makes this graphic novel such a knockout. I won't reveal a spoiler here. I'll just say that it's clever, surprising, and totally worth the price of admission.

One of the greatest framings for a Superman fic.
As long as I have been reading comics, I feel like I have a certain drive towards the stuff I like that comes off as pretty clear. As a person who wants more experience with the Man of Steel (Batman is my favorite, along with Spider-Man), I can say I came away thoroughly satisfied. The basics of a great Superman tale are covered and I know that might sound contradictory based on my previous statement, but I can back it up as someone who, when reading the origin story, needs to see something perfect. Red Son hits that on all five stars, considering the fact I'm bored of hearing about origin stories (Especially because Batman is my favorite.)Red Son re-envisions the beloved Man of Steel as someone who takes the idea of landing in the Soviet Union to its logical conclusion. Its ability to highlight subjective tides that are pertinently necessary in an era clothed with jingoistic nationalism (We live in America, people) that seems to prevade the needs of the people. As a willing candidate, the story steps up to the plate and assumes the role of making Superman a believable villain. In aspect, this is one of the greatest stories of the Man of Steel and a purchase worth making. As a side note, I've been sticking to 'the classics', graphic novels that obviously take stories that are timeless within the comic book genre. If I may, this is not even canon and it's a classic. Check it out.

Wonderful read for pretty much anyone, Superman fan or not.
An amazing red, Red Son is one of those comics that works for those who are both deeply entrenched in the DC mythos, but also for those who know nothing about it, and just want a good read.I'm using it as a text with a high school students and the kids are having a blast reading it, and I love teaching it. With a litter primer about the Cold War, the kids are making some really profound connections to the current political climates, particularly the chilling similarities with what is going on in Russia now. Excellent read

Per gli amanti dei What if
Lettura interessante per chi come me é appassionato di What If, allostoria, storia alternativa ed ucronia.
