The CD features extensive liner notes interviewing many from the bands past as well as tons of photos from many eras of the Jonestown commune. Not only does the Retrospective have over twenty songs from the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning documentary 'Dig', picks from the large Bomp! catalog and great live versions of Hide and Seek and Swallowtail, it has other unreleased material, as well.

Great Bunch of Tunes
Great introduction to this band. More than half of these tunes are terrific with very few clunkers. Bought initially for the track Anemone but was thrilled with so many other great songs. Despite little airplay, these guys deserve to be heard. Anton is some kind of mad genius writing the bulk of the material. If you’re into these guys, checkout the film about them called Dig.

Love this compilation album tho I never received it from Amazon.
Actually I never received the double cd set collection and did not receive a refund I was allegedly going to get from the merchant. I didn't follow up on it because my brother in died and I was least concerned about tracking down how to file a claim through Amazon. That was a few years ago and it's over now. This is my favorite greatest hits compilation album by anyone ever. Really wish I had the cd set for my car.

Nice Collective - Start Here.
With all the acclaim surrounding Dig!, BJM needed this retrospective to seduce the new fans every day that did not know where to start. I own all of the records and yet, I still find throwing this one collective in gives me an indication of what Anton has been especially proud of over the years. Afterall, no real radio play, no real videos (thank god) and no good reason to why it took so long to boost up his fan base. What is not included on TPW is any track from Strung Out In Heaven - a great album, but on TVT. The liner notes are fun and informative regarding each track. Hell, there are even pictures of the Warhols as they still are part of the history. Musically, you get it all: the influences, the instruments, and the line-up changes...the songs are not in order, but the greatest thing to me is you would never know what was released ten years ago or today - NOT because the music is all the same, but because most of it is timeless.

NOT AS ADVERTISED. Let me start by saying I love The Brian Jonestown Massacre but this particular compilation is missing "Straight Up and Down (which is also the Boardwalk Empire theme song) that appears on the CD and is listed as included on this vinyl release by Amazon. It's the only song missing for some reason. That being said the vinyl is nicely pressed

Great 60's type music!

simply good music
I really love this group. The folk rock resonates with my love of mid 60's Byrds, Dylan and early airplane.A real tonic for lovers of that era,and quite simply good music. The songs are well crafted, and the production always rings honest. The name of the group ailienated my interest, but I'm glad I tried this compilation! Some deride this group as retro...give me retro anyday if that's what this is!

Move Over Dandy
This is a great double album. My brother introduced me to The BJM and Dig! the documentary. There's no argument the BJM far surpass The Dandy's. The Dandy's create songs that are catchy which inevitably lead to annoying. The BJM and frontmand Anton Newcombe are much more introscpective. Nevertheless, When Jokers Attack, Open Heart Surgery, and, Swalloetail are just a few tracks that show they're genious. I highly recommend everyone checking this out as well as Dig!

A work of true genius!
Trying to Review “Tepid Peppermint Wonderland whilst doing it justice, and putting it in perspective is a challenging task – the two discs contain a total of 38 tracks covering the earlier years of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Anton Newcombe’s band. I hadn’t heard of them until Christmas when my girlfriend bought me a copy of “Dig”, an extraordinary film documenting 7 years in the lives of The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre. The film made me want to hear more of Anton Newcombe’s music, and “Tepid Peppermint Wonderland” is now part of my collection. From the loose psychadelic ramble of “All Around You”, the opener, to the purposeful yet haunting “If Love is the Drug”, and the almost Pixies-like overdriven lead guitars that turn “That Girl Suicide” into a complex mesh of confused emotion, there are loads of influences here. “Get you out of my life” sounds as though it could have slipped off “Exile on Main Street”, and indeed is as good as any of the tracks on that classic album, and on the closing track “Sue” Anton’s vocals sound almost Jim Morrison-like. Favourite track for me out of the 38 is a live take of “Swallow Tail”, a gorgeous melding of sparkling rhythm guitars underpinning Anton’s distinctive voice. “If you were the last Dandy” is on this album too – The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s rather bitter “tribute” to the Dandy’s, and it’s the only song on this collection not written by Anton Newcombe, although it sort of fits his style. 38 tracks on a double CD and not a single poor or dodgy track at that – which is amazing in itself. I was astonished at the quality in all of the songs on this album. Anton is definitely a genius when it comes to music, he must be one of the greatest songwriters ever, and I really don't say that lightly. Anton's life hasn't always been straightforward – I’d highly recommend watching “Dig” if it’s the only DVD you see this year, but that’s another story. This album is a “MUST BUY” though – you are definitely missing out if you don’t experience Brian Jonestown Massacre for yourself.

A great intro to BJM!
It’s a dip into the deep vaults of BJM’s music, but it’s a great start, a great little introduction to their diverse musical world..

Stupendous!!!
Mixed emotions...firstly I'm exited about getting into a new/old band and secondly annoyed I didn't get into these guys back in the 90's! After been blown away by their perfomance at the Birmingham o2 Academy 2 last Monday (09/07/12) I have a new favourite and hope that they don't get too big and end up being played every 10 mins on the radio or end up on a beer ad!As I take a breather from just listening to both CDs back to back (before I put them on again) I would like to say that Anton Newcombe is a genius and The BJM are the most uder-rated band I've came across. This Album a great introduction to the band with live and previously unreleased material it's a true gem that sits nicely with the rest of the BJM albums. If your into Kirt Vile, BRMC, Jesus & Mary Chain, Spiritualized....THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE!!!
