this works!
As a special education teacher (4th grade) I get catalogs and materials passed to me all the time on how I can help my students "catch up" or get better with a certain skill. This book actually is worth the money and is easy to implement and use even when you don't have any more room for "something else". It takes me 10 mins. to introduce and read the selection for the week with the students. They they take it home and have to read it with their parents and bring it back. There is a place for a parent sig. right on it so that's great! It also has a little note to the parents on how they can help with the reading. They are all different, fairy tales, nonfiction, poems, ect. I like the variety and think any time a child gets an opportunity to read aloud with their parent it helps. The kids don't mind either bc it only takes them 5-10 mins. for homework.

Good for busy teachers
Really great book. It's all set up to be used as weekly homework assignments to be done with parents - basically, one for each week of the school year. How handy is that for a busy teacher?! I really like the little notes to the parents on each assignment. It helps the parents feel like they can help their child focus on a specific reading comprehension skill and it gives parents an excuse to take some interest in their children's homework. There's even a place for the parent to sign to show they've gone over the hw together. I like this, as both a parent and a teacher. The readings are interesting and work well for oral reading practice. I use this with my ESL students who are at a higher grade level, but a lower reading level because the readings are still interesting enough for their age. It's an easy way to get student's reading more and connect with parents.

Helped my 2nd grader!
My 2nd grader was struggling with reading comprehension but the teacher never sent home any additional work for her. This made it a lot easier to track her progress and help her with her overall comprehension! The workbook also had reading "topics" such as focusing on the main idea or supporting characters vs. sequential orders. She improved from a 2 in reading to a 3 - which is the highest score!Very big help!

Excellent way to measure comprehension of material in a homework setting.
This had interesting stories and poems for reading comprehension. The questions that followed each assignment were developmentally appropriate. My students’ parents had high praise for this series.
