Love this for descriptive language!
As a speech-language pathologist, I LOVE these sorts of books. It allows the child to use the picture visuals to create descriptive language in order to tell their original story. There are lots of WH- and inferencing questions you can ask as well (such as: "how are they feeling?" "why do you think he's drawing a rain cloud?" "what do you think will happen next?"). The pictures are vibrant and each child can make their very own story! Super fun! :)

Without Words
What do you think about dinosaurs? Do you like to draw? The author, Bill Thomson, has written a brilliant book. This is a book for children with imaginations, and I have not seen many who are not imaginative. We find ourselves in a park on a rainy day, with children who find some chalk. Soon they are drawing pictures with the chalk. The sun, butterflies, a dinosaur, and soon they all come to life. The sun shines, the butterflies fly, and well, the dinosaur is there. When you read this book, you will discover what occurs next.Adults will enjoy this book along with the children. The children will be able to make the story up as they go along and put words into the childrens' mouths. The illustrations by Bill Thomson are bright, vivid and colorful. They depict the story as it is seen. This is quite an innovative book, and a fullmclassroom would really enjoy this book as much as one child.Recommended. prisrob 06-07-17

Favorite with boys
Chalk is a favorite with boys - mostly because of the big dinosaur on the front cover. It is a story of chalk drawings coming to life. I’m not sure younger elementary children will fully understand the story Bill Thomson tells in this wordless book. Older children, however, would be able to write quite an involved story based on the illustrations in Chalk.I have a copy of Chalk in my K-12 Christian School library. This is my honest review.

Wow! Gorgeous art. Fascinating story.
"A rainy day. Three kids in a park. A dinosaur spring rider. A bag of chalk. The kids begin to draw . . . and then . . . magic."Wow! My grandson and I have loved the books of David Wiesner - and have most of them. I've just discovered Bill Thomson and Chalk. Gorgeous art. Fascinating story. No words, but who needs words when the pictures tell it all (a picture is worth a 1,000 words, after all!). I was going to give this to my grandson for Christmas, but I don't think I can wait. He's going to get an early Christmas present today. I'm only sorry I've already purchased books for all the kids on my Christmas list this year. I sooo want to get this for someone! :-)And, Bill Thomson . . . . he even thanked the company who made the playground ride this story is written around.

3 Year-old Grandson's Favorite
A beautifully illustrated, wordless book. I gave this to my 3 year old grandson, and has become one of his favorite as he describes, in his words, what is happening. This has become my new go-to book for preschool birthdays along with a blue gift bag, with vinyl cutout yellow moon and stars on it, and a new pack of colored chalk. A rainy day, or monarch butterfly are never quite the same..;)

Brilliant story telling with no words!
I am highly recommending this book to EVERYONE! I enjoyed seeing the story played out in images only. The illustrations are superb! This book is a celebration of art and imagination. I dare to say it will tease the inner child out of the most serious adult. I see this wordless story being a catalyst for many animated conversations between children and their caregivers.

Great for putting imagination to work
I'm a professional tutor who work with students with learning disorders - this is a GREAT book to open the imagination of kids who have trouble putting concepts into words - they start by looking at the pictures, then they tell the story they thought up, then they write it down. I have had a lot of success with this book, and "Fossil" is just as good.

It's a great book to get kids involved in storytelling
Yes, this book has no words. But it doesn't need words because the pictures are so engaging. It's a great book to get kids involved in storytelling. You can tell the story together and talk about what is happening in the pictures. It's so much fun to re-read because the story can be different each time- you just have to be creative! The kids I work with who can't read love that they can still "read" the book to me and tell me the story, and we use it to work on vocabulary, making inferences, describing, etc. I just love the art- it looks computer generated but it's actually not.

Kids love it
Purchased this along with a few other ebooks before going on holiday recently. I failed to pick up on the fact it has no narrative, no words to read. To be fair though going back to the item description its quite clear so that's my fault for not reading the decription thoroughly. However the kids loved it because every time I told the story, it was a little bit different. It inspired them to be imaginative after they got what the story was about and they probably asked me to 'read' this book more than any other while we are away. So why 4 stars and not 5. My view is that childrens books are there to encourage children to read. My 6 year old loves reading but wont touch this book unless I read it to her, but she loves it when I do, which is great because I love reading to the kids. The drawings by the way are amazing, although they are that good I do wonder if in fact they are computer generated...
