We Are the Ants is a hybrid YA novel, with elements of sci-fi, coming of age and romance thrown in. Henry is struggling at home—his mum hasn’t coped since his dad left, his brother bullies him, and he’s losing his grandmother to Alzheimer’s. He watches his fellow students drive around in flash cars, while his family just struggle to get by. And he lost his boyfriend to suicide. But on top of all that, he’s regularly kidnapped by slug-like aliens, who now want him to decide whether the Earth will end. Thanks to his brother telling everyone in school about the abductions, his fellow students call him Space Boy, and bully him mercilessly. Henry isn’t really sure whether the Earth is worth saving.Despite the pretty out there premise of the alien abductions, We Are the Ants is mostly a high school coming of age story. It’s pretty dark and brutal at times, more so than average. Henry is dealing with a lot of things, and has an understandably bleak outlook on life. His voice is really distinctive, veering from alienated distance to dark humour. The voice was really the first thing to grab me about the novel. Henry definitely serves up a whole heap of existential angst along the way, as he tries to negotiate his increasingly desperate life, and feelings of self-loathing. There were a few shocks in the story, as Henry punishes himself for his perceived failings with his late boyfriend, or is punished by others or by circumstance. When a new student, Diego Vega, befriends him, he’s really in no state to embark on a new relationship.There’s a lot going on in this novel, and Hutchinson does justice to the varied complex issues covered, particularly the family’s financial hardship and the various problems that arise from that. There’s really no let up for Henry. (Trigger warnings for bullying, sexual assault and attempted rape.)It’s a good book. But I was a little disappointed in the ending. It didn’t quite satisfy as a pay-off to all that angst and trauma. And not because it wasn’t a happy ending. It just had too much ambiguity for me, given the novel set-up. However, even given the ending (which I don’t want to spoiler), We Are the Ants is definitely worth a look.

Bought as a gift for my son's (15th) birthday, who says it's one of the best books he's ever read. He's a very able reader and had to reread it because he felt like he'd missed bits first time round, but through my enjoyed it both times. It's currently on loan to his English teacher, who has already ordered himself a copy and recommended it to others despite not having finished it yet. Some quite mature themes (and language) so be aware if this might be an issue for you.

Beautiful book and probably one of the best reads of the year for me. The story was captivating and so different from all the others books I've read before.Shuan David Hutchinson is a fantastic writer with a great understanding of how complicatd life is and how we are all so different one from another.5 star reads and defenely raccomad reading this books - it will not disappoint you!!

I just adore this book. Everything about it- the perfect balance between humour, sci-fi and heartbreaking reality. I've never laughed and cried within the few pages before. I'm literally trying to get everyone I know to read this because it means so much to me

I have recently been reading many books that feature a gay protagonist and this is by far the best. It is incredibly well written, and has an amazing story line. It is also one of the few books where I am totally satisfied with the ending. It is now my favorite book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This is an entirely unique young adult novel with a concept that I truly enjoyed. I would recommend it for absolutely anyone.

Ich habe gelacht, gelitten und an ein-zwei Stellen musste ich mir sogar ein Tränchen verdrücken. Aber von vorn:Henry Denton hat es nicht leicht. Seine Mutter mag den Alkohol ein bisschen zu sehr, seine Großmutter ist dement, sein älterer Bruder ein Idiot, sein Freund hat sich umgebracht, seine aktuelle Affäre Marcus, der coolste Junge der Schule, behandelt ihn nach außen hin wie Dreck und der Neue, Diego, verwirrt ihn maßlos... außerdem wird er seit Jahren regelmäßig von Aliens entführt, die merkwürdige und im Buch nicht näher erklärte Experimente mit ihm machen.Eines Tages geben die Aliens Henry zu verstehen, dass die Welt an einem bestimmten Tag enden wird - und das er die Chance hat, dies zu verhindern, in dem er einfach einen Knopf drückt. Henry versucht verzweifelt, einen Grund zu finden, um den Knopf zu drücken, denn eigentlich sieht er in nichts einen Sinn und findet die Vorstellung, dass unser ganzer menschlicher Schwachsinn endet, gar nicht so schlecht.Das klingt jetzt alles erstmal sehr dramatisch und das ist es irgendwie auch. Trotzdem zieht sich immer ein leicht humoristischer Ton durch die Geschichte, der das Weiterlesen enorm erleichtert.Henry ist ein eher nihilistischer Charakter, der aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählt. Sein Ton ist manchmal melancholisch, manchmal zynisch, oft auch ziemlich scharfsinnig.Ich konnte mich sehr gut mit ihm identifizieren, denn ich ticke ähnlich und wie Henry habe auch ich einen geliebten Menschen verloren. Jesses Selbstmord hängt wie eine dunkle Wolke über ihm, er versteht nicht, wie der Mensch, den er am meisten liebte, ihn einfach so zurücklassen konnte.In der Schule wird er gemobbt, alle nennen ihn "Space Boy" (natürlich glaubt niemand die Sache mit den Aliens und er hat längst aufgehört, mit anderen darüber zu reden).Henry fragt im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder andere Charaktere, ob sie die Welt retten würden und bekommt unterschiedliche Antworten. Als Diego in sein Leben tritt, entwickelt er das erste mal seit langem wieder Gefühle. Auch seine alte Freundschaft zu Audrey, eine seiner besten Freundinnen vor Jesses Tod, lebt wieder auf.Ganz toll fand ich die Art und Weise, wie das LGBT-Thema in die Geschichte geflossen ist. Henry mag Jungs, das ist von Anfang an klar. Niemand stellt das in Frage, seine Familie ist cool damit, es gibt keine dramatischen Coming-Outs. Diego ist pansexuell, erwähnt das nur in einem Nebensatz und auch das ist okay.Es wird als Normalität behandelt, so wie jede Hetero-Liebe in 95% der Bücher.Die Probleme sind andere - aber sicher nicht die sexuelle Orientierung. Das war sehr erfrischend.Interessant waren auch Henrys Theorien, wie und warum die Welt enden könnte, die zwischen den Kapiteln immer mal wieder auftauchen. Ich bin ja ein großer Fan von Geschichten, in denen nicht alles Schwarz-Weiß ist und das ist hier wieder der Fall.Marcus, Henrys Affäre/Mobber, ist nicht einfach nur der Böse.Er hat tatsächlich tiefere Gefühle für "Space Boy" und war einer der wenigen, die in der schlimmen Zeit nach Jesse, für ihn da waren... leider kann er mit seinen Emotionen aber nicht umgehen. Hinzu kommt dann die Eifersucht auf Diego und Marcus macht wirklich schlimme Sachen.Es gibt eine Mobbing-Szene, die mich ein bisschen zum Weinen gebracht hat.Zum Ende hin war es mir zwar ein wenig zu viel Drama (jeder hat ein trauriges Geheimnis, allen passiert etwas Schlimmes, es gibt eine versuchte Vergewaltigung), aber zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte ich mich schon so in das Buch verliebt, dass mir das ganz egal war.Der Autor hat mich mitgerissen und in mir Emotionen geweckt, wie schon lange kein Buch mehr und ich habe es sehr genossen.Bleibt also zum Schluss nur noch die Frage vom Anfang: Würdest du den Knopf drücken und die Welt retten?

Meinung:"We are the Ants" hat mich direkt angesprochen. Der Klappentext klingt so verrückt und abgedreht, ich musste das Buch einfach lesen. Bereut habe ich das keine Sekunde, denn Highlights liest man eben gerne! Mit dem Namen Shaun David Hutchinson konnte ich vorher nicht viel anfangen, obwohl „We are the Ants“ nicht sein Erstling ist – bisher ist er mir aber nie unter die Augen gekommen. Eine Schande! Wenn seine anderen Bücher nur halb so gut sind, wie dieses hier, dann Hut ab.Henry ist Hauptfigur in diesem Roman, in dem es der Autor ganz fantastisch geschafft hat, eine Geschichte zu schreiben, die mich oftmals unglaublich berühren konnte. Henrys Leben ist nämlich gehörig aus dem Ruder gelaufen und das scheint weiterhin anzuhalten. Sein Freund hat vor einigen Monaten Selbstmord begangen und Henry scheint immer noch in einer Starre zu stecken, aus die er nicht erwachen kann. Selbstzweifel, Selbsthass lassen ihn immer wieder die Frage stellen, warum Jesse freiwillig aus dem Leben getreten ist und er keine Anzeichen gesehen hat. Hat er Jesse zu wenig geliebt? Hat er Jesse mit seiner Liebe erdrückt? In dieser Spirale der Trauer ist es wenig hilfreich, dass seine geliebte Großmutter langsam aber sicher ihre Erinnerungen an Alzheimer verliert, dass seine Mutter nach der Trennung von seinem Vater wenig Selbstwertgefühl besitzt, sein nichtsnutziger Bruder plötzlich Vater wird und er in der Schule von seinen Mitschülern gequält wird. „Space Boy“, so nennen sie ihn und dieser Name kommt nicht von ungefähr!Henry wurde nämlich mit 13 Jahren das erste Mal von Aliens entführt und das geschieht seither in regelmäßigen Abständen. Als das an die Öffentlichkeit kommt, ist er das gefundene Opfer. In einer dieser "Alien-Nächte" bekommt er von den Aliens eröffnen, dass er entscheiden kann, ob die Welt in 144 Tagen untergehen soll oder ob er der Menschheit noch eine Chance gibt. Was soll er tun? Wie leicht wäre es, den roten Knopf zu drücken, um dem Leid endgültig zu entrinnen. Das klingt alles so deprimieren und das ist es auch, ich hatte aber trotzdem niemals das Gefühl, dass mich diese Traurigkeit, die die Geschichte ausstrahlt, selbst ergreift. Vielmehr hatte ich das Gefühl von Bewunderung für Henry, dass er all diese Ungerechtigkeit schon so lange aushält. Unzählige Male hatte ich das Bedürfnis diesen verdammten roten Knopf selber zu drücken, weil mich diese Gemeinheiten so wütend gemacht haben.Gleichzeit gab es so viele Momente im Buch, die einfach wahnsinnig schön sind und da muss ich dem Autor ein Kompliment machen. Das Buch ist vielschichtig und bedient diese „Schichten“ absolut gleichwertig. Henrys Oma bekommt genauso viel Wichtigkeit, wie die Momente mit seiner Mutter. Ebenso wird die Beziehung zu seinem Bruder nicht vernachlässigt. Jesses Selbstmord zieht sich zwar wie ein Leitfaden durch die gesamte Handlung, es passiert aber trotzdem so viel drum herum. Zudem ist das Buch einfach toll geschrieben und Herrn Hutchinson gelingt fabelhaft der Spagat zwischen humorvollen und traurig/emotionalen Augenblicken.„Depression isn't a war you win. It's a battle you fight every day. You never get to stop, never get to rest. It's one bloody fray after another.“ (S.328)Ich habe wirklich nichts an dem Buch auszusetzen und konnte jederzeit gebannt verfolgen, wie sich Henry in den 144 Tagen weiterentwickelt, und war natürlich gespannt darauf, wie das Ende ablaufen würde. Für mich war es einfach nur perfekt, so wie es ist. „We are the Ants“ ist für mich eben so ein Buch, das ich mit einem Gefühl zumache, das irgendwie anders ist – großartig!Fazit:„We are the Ants“ von Shaun David Hutchinson ist das erste Buch dieses Jahr, das mich vollends überzeugen konnte. Authentische Charaktere, viele Emotionen (schöne & traurige) und eine doch etwas skurrile Handlung machen dieses Buch zu einem Highlight. Lesen, ich bitte darum!

If you're a sadomasochist this is the book for you. You will end up not getting any sleep and go into work with red puffy eyes. Your co-workers will assume that you abuse narcotics or alcohol when in reality your problem is your Kindle. You will not be able to get any sleep until the last page is read. The story is about the aftermath from a young man's suicide. He leaves a swath of very broken people who can't accept that they aren't responsible for what happened. It been years since I've read something that affected me so profoundly. It also makes me wonder what the hell happened to the poor fellow who wrote it.

First of all I choose this book because of the mainly positive reviews and the lack of negative ones. Which was a surprise to me since I didn't think it's a popular book. I thought: "Okay? I've never heard of this one before; it can't be THAT good."But actually IT IS THAT GOOD.I don't want to spoiler so I will keep it simple: I loved the writing, the humor and the plot that contains more than it may reveal at first (but there was also no big plot twist but honestly this novel doesn't need one to be great). And the perfectly fitting ending was another outstanding feature that makes the book one of my favorites.To be honest, for a short time at some point it was a little bit boring but that didn't stop me from reading on and the book made a great comeback.For everyone who has a soft spot for deep thoughts and sad but also adorable storys: You'll love it.

Took me long enough to get to this beautiful book. So glad I found it. I thoroughly enjoyed Henry's story. Coming out of such a devastating story filled with hope and happiness feels almost like alchemy. Definitely my favorite read of 2018. Exquisite.

Hier geht's um Depression, Verlust, geistige Gesundheit, Mobbing und so ziemlich jeden Trigger, den man sich vorstellen kann. Trotzdem ist das alles in einer einfachen Geschichte verwoben und gut erzählt. Beim Lesen hatte das Buch manchmal seine Längen, aber besonders die Auflösung hat mich überzeugt.

I loved this book, not only because of it's content but because of the amazing writing. I didn't know what it was going to be about before I got it because it was for a book club. It was very teen angsty, and at first that turned me off but the writing was so good I couldn't stop reading. If you're a teenager, you'll love it, and if you're an adult you may still love it!

Con el suicidio de su novio, el bullying de prácticamente toda su escuela, su falta de amigos, y varios problemas familiares, su vida es básicamente un infierno. Y ahora, el tiene la oportunidad de salvar el mundo de su destrucción en 144 días.Durante ésta historia, vemos a Henry luchando con todos los problemas que le rodean, pensando si un mundo tan dañado como el nuestro en realidad merece ser salvado, cuando todo sería más fácil si no lo hace.Es una maravillosa lectura que atrapa fácilmente. La historia no solo es original, que por más peculiar que suene (con algo tan controversial como es la vida alienígena), es inteligente y habla sobre problemas fuertes y reales, con un protagonista cautivador y personajes secundarios carismáticos que tienen un desarrollo estupendo. Tiene componentes tan sensibles que en las manos equivocas podría haber sido un desastre, pero el autor supo como manejarlo correctamente.Éste libro fue capaz de destruirme y volverme a construir. Un libro que me alegra que exista y que se convirtió en uno de mis nuevos favoritos.

Es un libro que te habla de depresión, suicidio, y que constantemente te hace cuestionarte lo difícil que llega a ser seguir adelante cuando las cosas se ven muy mal y ya llevan tiempo así; pero también e habla de esperanza de segundas oportunidades. Bellamente escrito. Recomendable al 100.

This book really moved me and I had to put it down a few times to catch a breath. It makes you think about life itselfand everything and evryone around you. Furthermore I loved that the LGBT aspect could'vd been substituted for any other love story so it was just displayed as completely normal. Definitely recommend this!!!

I wish I had read this novel at a more vulnerable time in my life. The story is touching and raw and left me in tears and delighted. Shaun David Hitchinson is a talented world sculptor.
