The Original Mother Goose: Based on the 1916 Classic

As a great great grandmother I wanted a children's book for a grandchild to reflect those I read to my children. What could be more nostalgic than The Original Mother Goose? I didn't set my expectations too high because the price was so reasonable but hoped for the best. This book exceeded all I had wanted. Everything about it is perfect, from the exterior to size, illustrations, colors, and the over 140 nursery rhymes! Best baby gift I ever gave to a grandchild.

When I was very young I had a Mother Goose book with so many rhymes in it that it was staggering to even consider reading them all. But it also had vibrant, sometimes creepy, pictures that went along with them so I began reading them, slowly at first obviously, I was 5 and learning. Now that I have my own son I wanted him to be able to read the same rhymes with the same pictures. I searched everywhere but most Mother Goose collections have been abridged or even changed to make them more "feel goodie". Well this is the original and it's the one you want if you love Mother Goose. It has all the rhymes and all the same creepy artwork from when I was a kid. The only difference is the cover is purple instead of green. Every child should own a copy of this collection:)

This is the same book I read to my children from. These poems are timeless and classic. There are so MANY poems, and the illustrations are beautiful and charming. Back then I even cut out 4 of them and had them framed to hang on my daughter's bedroom wall. I got a copy for my daughter to share with her child when he's old enough. I think he will especially be interested because they live in Boston, where Mother Goose's grave is! (located in the cemetery downtown, on The Freedom Trail)

The pictures are what to expect as in the very early editions of Mother Goose. Nothing weird or scary depicted here. Besides memorizing Bible verses as a first time memorization activity...Mother Goose is also one of the first memorization activities a (too young to read) child show be able to recite. I sometimes help families tutor, and I am finding the majority of families have not read to the children, nor helped them to memorize at an early age Mother Goose or other children's poetic verses with their rhythms. This should be required aloud reading/hearing for ages 2 to 6. Thanks for the reasonable price.

This book wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for. I thought they were old stories (like chicken little, the boy who cried wolf). I probably didn’t read the description properly, but they are definitely just nursery rhymes. The pictures are nice, but the rhymes get old and kind of boring after a page or 2. Biggest complaint is that the front picture of the book is a giant sticker. It is so cheap looking and completely kills the “old fashioned” feel. If you want a giant book with 100’s of nursery rhymes, this is your book. If not, keep looking.

I grew up with the original Mother Goose rhymes, and when the opportunity arose, I wanted to buy a new edition that my God-Daughter could enjoy and treasure as I did my copy. I wanted the original versions of the rhymes, not some altered, "politically-correct" version. Personally, I feel that altering an author's work in such fashion is just wrong... but that's my opinion. This book is beautifully bound and illustrated, and is just what I was looking for. It's truly what I'd consider a keepsake edition. I know she'll treasure it just as I did my copy so many years ago.

This was a great find. The language is just like what I remembered and the images are beautiful. Some are full pages and some are less. The print is so pretty and it has all the rhymes I grew up with. This will be a great book for when my baby is old enough to understand and read it herself.

Liked size of print for these granny eyes so I can read it without squinting 😆.

Je n'ai pas choisi d'offrir cet ouvrage pour les histoires (classiques parmi les classiques), mais pour les très jolies et douces illustrations, qui ne peuvent que faire rêver un enfant.

I bought it for someone else as a gift right after I got one for my daughter.

I bought this as a gift for a newborn....I grew up on Mother Goose as did my girls, and I believe my Mom did too...so the contents are the same and as great as ever... I was just upset with the bad job of glueing on the cover...it was full of wrinkles and didn't look very nice for a gift ...
