Fs8161 is for flat surfaces. The pucture shows for lap surface. Which is correct?

the box in the picture is for dutch lap vinyl siding, which isn't flat, the box turns the surface into a flat surface when mounted, that's what i used it for. i guess, you can cut the flanges off to make it for a flat surface, but not sure of that

how do you mount a weather proof cover to this item
