How does the system lock in place. I find that the black ring at the base tends to drop off when you push the stopper over the bottle.

Try lifting the chrome lever then push the unit onto the neck of the bottle. Close the lever. This should anchor the unit onto the bottle neck. The lever is then lifted to allow the flow of wine.

Does anyone know if Vacuvin guarantees this product and for how long? Mine's snapped in half after 5 years' use.

No, but I doubt it would still be guaranteed for as long as 5 years. I have had mine a few years longer and it is still sound. But, it doesn’t fit all bottles and when pouring it can leak wasting the wine, so I mainly use it as a stopper.

does it fit sparkling wine bottles?

Yes,designed for that purpose. Works really well & you can certainly keep an opened bottle for a couple of days With the fizz intact. Very happy with this sparkling wine keeper.
