I have 3 cats, and foe the last 3 or 4 months, I've been in a middle of the last big move of my life. If you have cats, you know they don't like chaos or disorder or messes-- or change of any kind. And they've had to be put outside when people came to view our house (we're selling to move across the country). They prefer to stay inside, except the 1-year-old. My other two are around 10-11 years old- and one of them "sprays" when he's upset. As my living room and other areas started to be packed up and moved to the garage, I noticed he had "marked" my treadmill. My daughter recommended this, she said it worked wonderful when they adopted a feral diameter they found while camping. I honestly didn't have high hopes for this. It's plugged in by my treadmill right now- I wish I didn't have to plug it into a power strip- it's designed for a wall plug. I didn't know how far the range would be. These pheromones are something only cats can smell. Being spring, I have the door open a lot, but despite that, it seems to be working! My orange Tabby hasn't sprayed, and I even gave away the sofa they loved. Nothing is even left in the living room except boxes of records, boxes of wall mirrors, and 3 record cabinets. It's really a mess,but despite it all, my cats seem calm. I wish this came in a plug I could use in my car- I'll be driving the three of them and my Jack Russel Terrier across the country in a very full mini van, and I'm really worried about that...I definitely recommend this product. I will be looking into their other offerings, hopefully there will be something I can use on the van- that could turn disastrous very fast in any number of ways. This container-I have it plugged in full-time, sideways- will hopefully last 3 months. My daughter says they last "a few months", but I don't know if she unplugs it sometimes. It's a little expensive, but so worth it! It has a nightlight, and glows a lovely green. Heat is not an issue either. It's about the size of a Glade Plug-in, a little bigger.

I adopted a cat who was not very fearful and not getting along with my resident cat, even with the slowest of proper introductions. I ended up researching and going with three different pheromone products. These products use a synthetic pheromone complex, which they hint at the types of pheremones, but not exactly stating they are direct analogs of the usual pheromones - F3 (Feline Facial Pheromone, type 3) and FAP (Feline Appeasing Pheromone). F3 is used in marking inanimate objects (e.g. furniture) when rubbing the face and chin. This allows the cat to mark the objects in their environment as familiar and safe, helping to create a sort of map of places where they feel comfortable and development of a sense of belonging. FAP is secreted by the mammary glands of a nursing mother cat when nursing. It triggers attachment-type reactions, helping the mother cat and her kittens develop a positive affiliation with one another. The Feliway Optimum uses a combination of these pheromones to help a cat to relax (F3) while also begin to bond with other living beings (FAP), including cats, other animals, and people. Only cats will be neurologically affected by the pheremones, so if you have cats and dogs trying to bond, you would need products for each type of animal. I also purchased the Feliway Spray (F3 product) to spray on carriers, cat beds, cat furniture, to try to help the cats to relax in their safe spaces. I originally bought the Feliway Multicat (FAP only) Diffuser because the biggest issue was getting the cats to get along. I have now switched to the Optimum at week 6, as they are now generally good with sharing the house. I also purchased another product with F3 and MAP pheromones (bSerenity) that I liked more than the Feliway Optimum, but it was out of stock and I already had the Feliway Diffuser units, so I switched. The bSerenity is nice because it has a slightly smaller diffuser that better accomodates sharing the outlet with another plugged device. Overall - between the different products we now have a more comfident new cat and an older cat who is much more relaxed and comfortable sharing the space.
