excellent unit with great sounds
Get your fave amp tones in a unit smaller than a pack of cards. Software allows you to capture the tone of other amps. You can switch between up to 3 different presets (search for this tip online) Plenty of demos online. Great practice/rehearsal/tuition tool when you want to go DI straight into a mixer or FRFR system. If you like to access more the a couple of presets you might want to consider the bigger version.Wasnt a fan of the internal presets but you have access to thousands using the online toneNet (included) Personally, i created/profiled/captured my own amp sounds and they have been faithfully reproduced.

Great pedal . Not great software.
Amazing tiny bit of kit that I’m able to use live. Let down by non intuitive software.

Insane tech for the money
I can't understand a lot of the negative reviews. I do already use Tonex, so maybe thats why I found the setup easy. you download the driver from the IK Product Manager, you plug the pedal into a USB C port, then open up your Tonex software (or download it if its your first time) Its probably best to use your usual guitar/audio interface to demo new profiles rather than use the tonex as the audio interface. Then you just drag and drop. When done, take the pedal out, plug it into your speakers/hifi, PA, effect return or whetever, just make sure to turn of the speaker IR's if you are using a guitar cab. If ou like the profiles in tonex, then they are exactly when you are putting on the pedal. Simple.now, you can stick this little beauty on the end of your pedal board and use it as your amp - for example, and all my dirt pedals (OCD, Riot, etc) work great into a edge of breakup clean amp profile.Yes the knobs are a bit fiddly, but not impossible. The fact you can also use it for stomp box models, means I can also try out new pedals, Klon anyone? In front of my actual valve amps. Remember this thing is £150 and can basically do what a kemper does without all the bells and whistles.I like the Tonex eco system, and I'm fairly tech savvy. So I'm probably the perfect customer.Oh, FWIW check out third party captures like amalgam, or browse the thousands on Tone.net - its really quite remarkable.

Hi gain is muffled. Terrible software
Clean and low gain sounds are ok, but high gain is muffled, and utter rubbish. Ok in tonex but awful when copied to the pedal. And the software.... Wow that is another level of bad design.

Best value for money purchase. Get one.
I have various guitar rigs but this has got to be the best value for money yet. I love it Massive user library to wade through or create your own. I am currently using it live in church every Sunday. Btw check out Builty Tonex One Controller project for a way to massively expand it's capabilities.

Overall, a frustrating and disappointing experience
I was fully expecting this to be a glowing review, as I had done a ton of research before buying and was confident that the Tonex One was right for me. However, my experience has been less than stellar. To start with, I was sent a used Tonex One, despite buying a new one. That really bugs me. It had previously been registered, so I could not download the required software. IK Multimedia's support desk were very responsive, though, and were able to release the serial number, so full marks for that. I wondered if the previous owner had bought and returned it just to get access to the software (which can run without the pedal). If that is the case then I hope they find it is unregistered when they next try and use it!On inspecting the item I could see signs of wear on the base and on the volume knob. When I opened the packaging I had thought that it looked a bit tatty, and it appeared that one of the security tabs had been cut. Bit of a red flag, that. Additionally, a number of YouTube reviewers have commented that they thought the inclusion of a small plug for the USB socket was helpful, but there was no plug in my delivery, again suggesting that the item had been previously owned. So, not a great start.Once IK Multimedia had released the serial number and I was able to register the software, I started to have a play with the Tonex, to make sure all was working as it should. I would have reluctantly accepted the fact that it wasn't new if everything worked OK. Sadly, it did not.The pedal is stuck in lock mode, meaning that I can't tweak any settings on the pedal itself, only in the Tonex software. That renders it almost useless. Naturally I checked the manual (which is VERY hard to track down!) and scoured the internet for possible solutions. You lock and unlock the pedal by holding the ALT button for three seconds. This didn't work. It seems this issue is not unheard of and IK Multimedia's solution is to factory reset the pedal. That doesn't fill me with confidence.Based on all of this I decided to return the faulty/used pedal and ask for a replacement. That process was swift and relatively straightforward, although I shouldn't have needed to do it. I was pleased that they will send out a replacement (which arrives tomorrow) before receiving the faulty item.Let me finish with a brief review of the item itself, which is what won it the three stars.GOOD POINTS:- Build quality is excellent. Even the teeny knobs feel solid.- The tones are fantastic. Well, maybe not the default presets, but those I found through the Tonex software and tweaked were astonishingly good, making me really want to have one (or even two) of these pedals in my arsenal.- Versatility is great - and doubly so when paired with Amplitube. I have IK Multimedia Total Studio 4 Max, which includes full copies of Tonex and Amplitube - a great pairing with the Tonex pedal.- Can be powered by USB, although I am going to try 12v as well to see if it gives better noise performance.BAD POINTS:- It certainly isn't 'plug in and tinker' friendly. There's a learning curve and plenty of things that will trip you up if you don't do a bit of research. Thankfully, YouTube is laden with helpful videos.- The Tonex software is absolutely dire. I've been around software for nearly fifty years and worked for a software developer for twenty. I really do know what's good and what's not. This is not. It's possibly the most unintuitive application I have ever used in my life! Thankfully, a new and updated version is released on 13th March which claims to resolve some of the concerns that almost the entire user base seems to have. I'll save my judgement until then, but I am hopeful it won't be anything like as convoluted as the current version.- The supplied USB cable is woefully short and is USB-C to USB-C, meaning you need a USB-C to USB-A cable or adaptor. Not a major issue, unless you get this on Christmas Day and don't have one to hand.- Absolutely no paperwork beyond a small card with a QR code for registration and a QR code to download the apps.- There is also a QR code on te base of the pedal that says 'Product Instructions'. This takes you to the IK Multimedia home page bearing links to more stuff to buy. And even if it did take me to the manual, how is it useful for me to have that on my phone?? I want it on a big screen where I can actually read it. For info, the manual can be found in the IK Multimedia Product Manager - but there's nothing to tell you that . . .- Nowhere does it tell you that you also need to download and instal drivers for the pedal in order for it to work. Luckily I had done my research ahead of time, but why on earth was that not on the card as well?- Despite a 12v DC socket being present, there is no indication of what you actually need to power the pedal. That's in the elusive manual. It's 9V DC 120 mA center negative, by the way, but it doesn't tell you what barrel size you need.I still recommend the Tonex One pedal. But, caveat emptor - do your research, make sure you install the latest version of the software when it's released, and double check you haven't been sent a used one!
