Yes, it does have a red plastic lid which can be sometimes be difficult to get back correctly on the earthenware pot.Not insurmountale, however, when the contents are so good.

what is the difference between Pommery meaux mustard and Pommery French meaux mustard from the same supplier - apart from the price?

I may be wrong but I would like to assume that both are French. The one that has 'French' in its title usually (always?) has wholegrain after it - so it's got crunchy bits in it. Look carefully at the volume of mustard in each case before comparing prices - sometimes it's hard to find out the volume of the pots - 500gm is fairly large. I'm sure all Pommery mustard is delicious!

Does this have a best before date?

No idea, but this mustard is so good, it never stays round long enough for us to worry about it.

How do I separate the red plastic lid from the jar? I have forced the lid away from the edge of the top but no further.

If I remember correctly you need to break the wax seal first, then cut the red ribbon. The lid seals very well, but it will open maybe use a screwdriver at first, but I can usually open with my hands after opening it the first time. It's worth it - I think it's the best mustard in the world.
