No, you control how hard you clamp down on them. The teeth are pretty wide, too. But with a rattler that size--not trying to "un-sell" this product, mind you, but our mother rattler had eight babies in 2013 that aren't much bigger than the size you're talking about now (they grow VERY slowly), and I still just use a clothes hanger that I bent into the shape of a hook. If you don't have to go farther than a hundred feet, the hanger or any other wire like it would be just as good.

Q: does it work for small snakes, like those in garden, lawn, less than a foot or 6 inches skinny snake without breaking them?

I'll be honest with you. Since I purchased my snake tongs, I have not seen any thing other than small decays and yellow belly racers, neither that required snake tongs. They were small enough to take away from cats and move to a safe area by hand. I would think it would be difficult to pick up a small snake with these tongs. I would be afraid of squeezing it too hard. I would recommend these particular tongs for snakes that are at least an inch or bigger in diameter. I hope that helps.
