Yes, but for grooves only 1/4 inch deep, and a paint finish, I would spend less and use bondo. WoodEpox is generally better for larger patch applications, or where sagging is a concern.

Can you nail or screw into it?

Yes, you can treat it like normal wood when it cures. You can sand, carve, stain, screw, nail, saw. It's pretty amazing stuff and I have used it for many restoration projects where wood was rotten or missing.

Does it make a difference if I put wood epoxy immediately after the liquid wood or could I put it on separate days?

I put the epoxy on when the liquid wood gets tacky. The liquid wood has a glossy surface when it dries so your guess about adhering to a slick surface as opposed to a tacky one is as good as mine
