Wonderful verse translation by David Raeburn
Ovid's Metamorphoses is a collection of ancient Greek and Roman myths which have been wonderfully crafted into an epic. The lines are written using the dactylic hexameter as opposed to the regular iambic pentameter used by most English translators. Raeburn also uses the enjambment technique to relate one line to the next, requiring a complete reading of the lines to come to a full understanding. It is a highly effective technique which brings an epic feeling to the poem. The poem is divided into 15 books which makes it longer than Virgil's Aenead. Raeburn brilliantly captures the original Ovidian rhyming pattern. It is a truly wonderful experience. The detailed introduction at the beginning supplements the overall understanding of Ovid's mindset and why he chose to undertake such a heavy task.It is believed that during his lifetime, Ovid envied Virgil since the latter was more famous as a poet in Rome. However scholars also agree, at least some of them, that Ovid was perhaps the greater of the two. The Metamorphoses serves as a great inspiration behind many of the plays of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and even Bernard Shaw. Goethe also regarded the Metamorphoses as an important work of Classical literature. Hence modern scholars have been researching about this poem of epic proportions with renewed vigour. Their research has led some to believe that it is indeed better than Aenead.Every literature enthusiast must read the book. Although written in verse, the lucid translation makes it a truly enjoyable experience. Highly recommended for all literature students and lovers of poetry in general.

As a man who knows small Latin and less Greek, Raeburn has done a fantastic job
If poets have a vision to prophesy truth, I shall live in my eternal fame

Bad product quality
Page quality is supbar and the book arrived in a slightly damaged condition. The contents are still great though, and Raeburn's translation of Ovid is easily the best.
