It's around 1/2 to 3/4 inch. It's very small and if you hang it with the adhesive only, you can only put super light items on it or it tilts

Q: Will the included tape destroy painted walls? (I know it says not for wallpaper)

yes! the shelf itself is good but the adhesive damaged my walls. made the paint & sheetrock come off. i recommend using screws to really secure it.
