Is there a night-time closure to keep raccoons out?

Sure. A hard plastic door is provided. It slides securely into place to keep out nocturnal varmints and keep your dog inside and safe.

Cannot use the door latch anymore? Does that make sense? You have to put a piece of lumber or some other inconvenient device to open and close? Or leave door unlocked?

Instal the pet door on the stationary side glass panel of the glass door. Then your sliding glass panel will close and lock as normal.

Does the installation of the pet door allow you to open/close your patio doors easily or is it permanently locked to frame?

The sliding patio door will open and close easily once the dog door is installed but the original door cannot be locked now since it closes against the dog door frame. When the sliding door opens now you lose part of the original opening because the dog door fits into the existing door frame channel.

Is the top of the door clear, or is it solid? For example - after it's installed - can you see through the top part?

It is clear like your sliding glass door so you can see through it.
