YES it is real leather. I would caution that the craftsmanship is less-than average, though as the handles broke after using this for only 2 weeks. Tread cautiously.

It absolutely can ! I do not know what all the other comments are about unless they all have huge arms and shoulders or where wearing multiple layers and a thick coat. I have this bag in multiple sizes and only attach the long strap if I am traveling by plane and need my hands to pull my luggage and want my purse on the front of my body during that time.
