No, you can use quiet a few different types of discs, for playing as well as burning. Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 and Media Suite comes with the drive, so that's all you need to watch and create discs.

Does the Cyberlink software that comes with the burner support windows 8.1 and above (Windows 10)? Or do you have to buy the upgrade?

I am and was running Windows 10 when I purchased this product. I did not have to buy an upgrade.

Will it play commercail bluray movies ?

If you have a program that will play them.It will read the disks but your computer has to have software installed to play them.

Is this unit compatible with mac os x 11.5 on a mac running big sur with the m1 chip? the listing says "yes" then "no."

I don't own a mac but one of the previously answered questions says it does work on a mac. I don't know about working with the other specifics in your question though.
